How long do other people's diverticulitis attacks last? Just read someone on soft diet x 2months?!

I'd love to know how long other people's flare-ups last on average. Have had D disease x 15 y. Had 3 attacks in past 6 wks. Urgh! I usually take antis & get up after 1 or 2 days, liquids only x 36hrs then soft foods x about a week, then gradually reintro fibre, seeds, pulses. Maybe I should stay on soft food more than a few days after 36h on liquids?? Opinions please! And btw its almost impossible to lose weight when this rotten condition dictates eating all the wrong stuff after an attack.. White flour pasta, mash..all those carbs! And stodge! Not helpful. Any ideas? Thanks. New to forum. Am 63 now & desperate to do anything to avoid surgery. Hi to all fellow-sufferers..this thing is a so 'n so & invades at the drop of a hat. Oh..and...
If anyone has ideas about how to address core strength safely please...do tell. Caz

I started hurting about a month ago. Reached out to primary doctor and she had me to do CT scan. Reached out to GI because pain got worse. Ended up in ER and doctor said looking ay my ct scan the diverticulitis was gone but i had uti and ecoli in my urine. They gave me the antibiotics that I take for diverticulitis and oxycodone for pain. Went to GI 2 days later and he said that i have post IBS. Gave me a prescription for diclyclomine that i take 4 times a day and told me to do a fodmap diet. As of today I'm still hurting, nausea, loose bowels and with the stuff I already eat for diverticulitis and now the list he gave me for IBS i can't eat. I don't know what to do😢

I know this was posted a while ago, but in my situation I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis in Feb 2018, and developed an abscess. Also developed anxiety and panic attacks. I lost 40 lbs cince all this happened. After all stool tests blood work many ct Scans and SIBO test my results are severe Diverticulosis (3 spots) in sigmoid, Diverticulitis induced IBS and now positive SIBO test. So back on antibiotics and the diets are so diff, afraid to eat anything. So frustrating, hope a dietitian will help. So for now I stick with low FodMat diet/ SIBO diet. I do herbal supplements and apple cider vinegar daily. Hope you feeling better and got a diet plan that works for you. 🌺🌸

I have pain right now but nothing that bad, when you get an infection is when you have to be concerned because that’s when it gets bad and it can burst and the pain is really, really bad.
I know this is not good advise because it involves alcohol and I don’t drink, the most I would was maybe one or two drinks a month but I was having an episode so I hadn’t really eaten for a week and half and it wasn’t going away but a friend invited me to a party and they offered me food and I said no, then he said do you want a drink? I said I’ll have what you are having and he gave me a vodka cranberry, had one and next morning pain was gone and I was fine, I’m guessing the vodka helped. (I know it is bad advise but it helped me). If you do try it and it works let me know. Hope you feel better soon.

I’m having a flare up now and it’s December before the holidays. This is my 4th flare up and it’s difficult. I’m on Cipro and Flagyl for 10 Days and feel nauseous all the time. I believe stress starts the ball rolling and the wrong foods contribute my Dr(gastro) wants me to see a surgeon. 😩 I’m scared!

I've had 4 attacks. 2007 2012, feb 2017 and then another in June. I was sent to a surgeon after the last one because the last two came four months apart. He was basically just watching me. Didn't ask me to have surgery or anything. All my symptoms twinges and pains etc did not go away the second two attacks like they did the first two. So I read on the internet about natural cures. Ive taken turmeric , capsules of oregano oil and grapefruit seed
Extract for the last 6 months and have not had an attack. I've had a few twinges that I thought might turn into one. When I do I double or triple up on the supplements until the twinges subside. I eat what I want. The gastro drs (3 different ones ) and the surgeon told me it has nothing to do with your food. Unless it's something that's constipatinf you. I don't run toward the constipation side though. Good luck. God bless.

I find that this helps. Water
Walking
Chicken soup
Coconut milk/or Rice Milk and Bananas in a mixer, smoothies.
Fyogel sachets, as it is essential to move things along.
No Soda
No fruit cake
No spice
No Pastries/No noodles/No curry of course
(i know its really boring, but you know what happens if you relapse)
Good luck, and i do understand how rotten it is,really.
as i said i find walking is very helpful.
I use a walking stick,in fact i make them !!
So there is more exercise right there.
ps Pea and ham soup is probably not a good idea,i just had some, and its not good, its probably the skins in the Peas.... good luck Chris

I have suffered from bouts of DD for many years. I was in my fifties when they started. At that time it was pain on my left side and I felt sick. After ct scan I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis. Gastro doctor said apply heat to area and take Tylenol. That worked but as more of the attacks occurred (aboIut 2 a year) I was put on Cipro and Flagel. They are very hard on the stomach but I got better so I wasn't going to complain.
After many years the attacks were almost predictable. January and June like a clock. At this point I always needed antibiotics.
I avoid nuts, seeds and raw vegetables. Also red meat. The crockpot has become my friend.
I have seen a surgeon twice and he always says the same thing. I can do surgery if you want but I don't recommend it unless it is absolutely necessary. He says it's important to drink lots of water, take Metamucil (it is not for me). It seems to make me constipated. I do take Miralax when I feel constipated and it was recommended to me after I had surgery for an adhesions. It does work.
I am presently having an attack at the moment and have not seen a doctor yet. My symptoms are very different from the first few attacks. The pain now radiates across the abdomen and in my low back. I am on day 3 and I am applying heat, taking tylenol and also Bentyl for spasms. I am on a low residue diet. Turkey, chicken and soft veggies. I eat ice pops.. all natural and am feeling a whole lot better. If in another day I would get worse I will get to doctor but after so many attacks I decided I wanted to give this one a chance without antibiotics and the low residue diet. Good Luck and my surgeon is a well respected and conservative one so I value his opinion and I have talked with those who have had surgery and they all say the same thing. They are releaved but after some time it's back again. Surgery should be your last option. Of course all of this should be thought over carefully. If you have an abcess or other life threatening condition you know you must do what is recommended by a doctor you trust. I know this post was written sometime ago so I hope you are doing well.

Hi Madeline, I’ve been in this for 5 months now, diagnosed in Feb . Diverticulitis, then abscess and in hospital so a month of antibiotics. And developed anxiety and panic attacks to top it all off. Have not been the same. Lost 40 lbs. (needed to anyways) but not that fast. So after stool tests to rule out Candida, parasites, and other bugs of gut, Tons of blood tests and Cat Scans, Endoscopy, and colonoscopy, and just had SIBO test, Diagnosed with Severe Diverticulosis (3 spots) in sigmoid, had 6 polyps removed and a scrape of colon for biopsy. Diverticulitis induced IBS and SIBO. So holy crap this is so stressful because diet is diff for all 3 . Don’t know what to eat. Or supplements to take. I have to start antibiotics again for the SIBO, just frustrating! Any suggestions or advice would be great from anyone ! ??😔

Hi Vickie Sorry to hear you have been through so much stress and pain lately... hang in there.
i found that the doctor gave me Omeprazole for the Acid Reflux
its good,
it works ,but i think i may have an ulcer and diverticulitis,
so anyway...i found that things are improving by eating porridge in the morning.... after drinking hot water.
The hot water is essential i find.
forget about that awful coffee, and tea, caffeine is poison for people like me with the D.
as i said before No fried food
No curry
No red Meat
chicken is ok,give the skin to cat or dog
no alcohol
no coca cola/no seeds/no nuts,no lemon at all,cut the lemon right out
nothing acid at all.
no iced water either,it doesn't help .
we need to try and drink hot water a lot now.
It is going to help you a lot.
putting fibre into your system is ok, but fibre chews up the water quickly,
and so you need to speed up the intake of hot water ,to get ahead and start to heal yourself ,slowly and surely.
Think hot water, its boiled so its really pure, and your diverticulitis is going to heal quicker if you do this starting as you as you get into the kitchen.
ok hang in there, try not to let your mind worry "you"
and stay away from dreadful food .take care now. CHRIS61391

I am 58 years old. Was diagnosed with diverticulosis many years ago and am just having my first flare up. Just finished flagyl and cipro which wiped me out even more. I am still having all the symptoms which is pain and cramping. I am tired all the time and can't get enough sleep. I have not done any diet as of yet and was not told to do anything different while taking my antibiotics. I take florostor and try to eat alot of fermented foods and yogurt. I am sick and tired! I also will go to any lengths to avoid surgery.
