How long does it take for 30 mg of Mirtazapine to take effect

I have just had my medication increased from 15 mg to 30 mg. When I started taking the 15 mg it literally started working the next day. I am now into my sixth day of 30 mg and I am feeling worse. I would appreciate it if someone could give me their experience with this medication.

Now 7 days anxiety free. So glad I stuck with the Mirtazipane. Merry Christmas to all and I wish everyone a happy 2019 with a full recovery from your ailments X

Anxiety has come back for last 2 days. Not awful but enough for it to distort my thinking and stop me being my normal self. Hoping it’s just a blip and have been doing the SilverCloud CBT online modules. Will just need to ride this out on the 45mg that initially make me feel good for over a week.

      Hi jon46722,

I hope you are feeling better today. How long have you been on mirtz? Anxiety does come and go, I have never really gotten rid of it eventhough I have been taking medication for more than a year. But I have seen that you are taking steps to fight it which is good. Take care.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hi Stu. been on Mirt for 8 weeks in total with nearly 2 weeks of that on 45mg. I am also taking the 200mg Sertraline that pooped out recently after 16 good years, hence the addition of Mirt as an augmentation strategy.

Hello, I actually started mirt last night 7.5 mg. I had previously been on celexa for about 3 years and it stopped working so they swapped me to lexapro. I have taken the lexapro for 5 weeks which seemed to help some but no where near back to my normal self. I am hoping this combination will help me. I actually spoke with the pharmacist when picking up the mirt and he said the lower doses are usually more sedating. not sure that this helps you any but wanted to say that. how are you doing now, 3 days later?

Hello, Mirtazapine is definitely one of the more quicker Antidepressants to start taking effect. However, any dose change normally takes a minimum of 2 weeks to settle and you often feel like you are going backwards before making positive improvements. It is still very early days for you. I am currently taking 30mg Mirtazapine alongside 200mg Sertraline. Best of luck with your recovery.

hi, I am interested how everyone is getting on. I have acute anxiety and SSRIs had horrendous side effects (despite being on citalopram successfully previously). Dr then tried me on 15mg of mirtazapine. They did settle the anxiety but didn't eliminate it. The mirt kicked in after just a few days but by week 4 stopped working. Dr increased dose to 30mg which I have taken for 3 nights so far. Bad day yesterday with anxiety, which has eased today but just felt a bit spaced out and lethargic. do you think the 30mg will work for me? I have been referred to specialist as I seem to be either resistant or suffer really bad side effects. Already tried citalopram (again) sertraline which were awful. Then took 15mg of veneflaxine which also made me I'll from just one dose. on so hoping mirt is going to help. I need some words of encouragement please xx

    Hi Patricia

I wish I had answer for you. someone on here, probably has good advise, based on their experiences with mirtazapine. I have GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) & have been on 7.5 mg for almost 2 yrs. With anxiety over the COVID-19 pandemic, my dr upped it to 15 mg, about 2 wks ago. That seemed to be working, but not so well anymore, with my sleep decreasing to about 5 hrs/night & my still having anxiety. When I have anxiety, my appetite decreases too. I tried self-medicating by having 4 to 6 ounces of red wine for sleeping. I don't really like it, and once the wine wears off, it makes me anxious once again. I'm not an alcoholic, & I thought it might help, but it doesn't. Yuck! I've phoned my dr & he said I can up my dosage from 15 to 30 mg. I wonder if I can just try & up it gradually to 22.5 first, instead of the 30. Having GAD, I worry about everything. I'm also, recovering from meniscus surgery on the knee. I am trying to get back into my daily walks, yoga, & meditation. I know I should stop the wine, don't like the taste, anyway. Any suggestions on trying to up the dosage to 22.5 instead of the full 30 mg.? Thank you in Advance!!!

    hi all,

i know this thread is old but im hoping to get some advice. I struggled with severe anxiety (combined with low mood) for a period back in 2015/2016, I ended up going on Celexa and seeing a therapist, eventually i got back to myself and came off medication after 9 months. I guess i have always lived in the shadow of anxiety, checking heart rate was low, checking i got a good nights sleep - all things that would give me a sense of security.

Recently i got an eye twitch and managed to convince myself that this was my anxiety returning. I saw my GP and asked to go on a low dose of Celexa again, the twitch went but the anxiety worsened. My dose was increased but still nothing.

I now live in fear of my eye twitching, like if it does I'll be so anxious i wont be able to mind my children, or go to work.

I saw a psychiatrist last month who put me on 15mg of mirtazapine (to be increased to 30mg after 1 week) he also put me on 2.5mg of olanzapine. This worked so well, I felt better in days so much so that i stopped taking he Olanzapine when i increased the mirtazapine dose. I think this was the first mistake.

Things disimproved, im more anxious now than i was when this all began. i have started back on the olazapine but still not feeling as good as i did, getting spells of severe anxiety.

Could the mirtazapine 30mg (this is my third week on the increased dose) be too much? The 15 was working well. Anyone tried taking 22.5mg?

I dont experience depression as the primary problem (i dont think anyway) but it can follow a period of sustained anxiety.

    please help 😃

      Hi Maria30770,

If you experienced anxiety while on mirtazapine, I would advise you to talk to your doctor so that he or she can adjust your medication. Magnesium is helpful for twitches, I've been taking magnesium daily for about two years now, there was a period when I was traveling and had to go without it for two weeks, and I immediately noticed the difference as I was experiencing twitches/muscle spasms more frequently.

AS the Husband of a sufferer of depression though I'd put in my views

I met my wife in 2001, she was 47 and the survivor of two dreadful marriages, First one was physiologically cruel and the second, once she was pregnant was, was a violent drunk. She was stuck in these relationships for 7 and 14 years respectively

My wife retired two years ago after suffering ageist bulling from some staff in the hospital. She was the oldest by 17 years in the department

She also suffered the loss of a sister and father in the matter of 2 years when she was about 26.

She battled on until the loss of her mum 7 years ago. Thats when the depression started.

In 2018 she was prescribed Sertraline ( cant recall the dose) it worked a bit but gave her terrible night sweats so she can off it but was really up. She became the live wire I fell in love with again. Pleasantly uninhibited and full of fun. Then in Sept 2020 , after a major row caused by her daughter she crashed back into a severe depression.

This time the Sertraline didnt work at all... just the sweats.

The GP then suggested Metazapine @ 15mg. It did raise her mood a little after a couple of weeks but then stalled. Just over two weeks ago she upped to 30mg. There has been an increase in her depression but according to the GP this is normal ( My sister who is a pharmacologist has confirmed this)

Other issues..a bit sleepy in the morning and the munchies in the evening.

Downside - temporary ( hopefully) lowering in mood

Upside - occasional big increase in Libido. Despite being in our 60s we do still enjoy 'Marital cuddles'
