How long does it take for MMA blood test results

For the past 18 months I haven't felt right to start with it was tiredness, occasionally feeling sick and lightheaded but back in July while eating my dinner my chin and one side of my face went numb. Since then i have suffered every day with all of the symptoms connected to b12 deficiency. I have has several serum b12 tests which always come back in the normal reference range but at the low end. 263 pg/ml, 320 pg/ml and 268 pg/ml my GP has said that as my levels are in the normal range deficiency is impossible. i also suffer with my stomach which has led to weight loss. ive had MRI scans, countless blood tests, 24 hour ECG and various other tests which have all come back clear or normal. The only thing that was picked up was a vit D deficiency which my GP said was causing all of my symptoms, this has now been corrected and my levels are back to normal but i am still very unwell and none of the symptoms have gone. I collapsed while in with my GP and she reluctantly agreed to test my b12 again along side MMA after i practically begged her to carry out the test.

i am really struggling have been signed off work for the last 6weeks and my period makes everything worse.

i had the MMA blood test over 2 weeks ago and wanted to know if anyone knows how ling this test takes to come back as i am struggling to cope now.

    Hi

Has your heart been thoroughly checked? My low level B12 and iron levels were only discovered after I had collapsed and had a pacemaker fitted for heart block. I have vasovagel syncope possibly triggered by low blood pressure. It causes my heart to slow down too much. Previously to this I had occasional days of feeling dizzy and unwell. These still continue but I don't collapse as my pacemaker corrects the problem.

I had a 24 hour ECG and 24 hour blood pressure monitor about 4 weeks ago, just waiting on the results to come back. These should highlight any issues and lead to further testing if its needed right ?

I would say don't rule it out even if nothing shows up. When I collapsed I was in hospital on a monitor for 3 days, I had all the scans and tests and nothing showed up. I even was sent home with a halter monitor twice. Luckily I saw a great Cardiologist who was convinced something wasn't right. He implanted a little devise designed to monitor your heart for up to 18 months. Fairly quickly luckily it showed I had Heart Block. (Basically the signal telling my heart to slow down goes into overdrive and slows it too much.). However once my pacemaker was fitted it showed it was only being used 16% of the time. The chances that I was on a heart monitor at the right time was pretty slim so without the devise my problem may never have been picked up perhaps until it was too late.

On this website I keep reading about people who are having B12 but are not feeling better. It does make me think that there are other issues being missed such as heart problem. Between my occasional odd days I feel really well, I have my shots every 12 weeks. I have seen pictures of myself from before the pacemaker and the B12 shots and I realise now how unwell I looked.

I will keep this in mind, unfortunately my doctors are not the most helpful and I am having to insist I am referred to see specialists to get the tests and have had to make a complaint to be taken seriously. I am not currently being seen by a cardiologist as the monitors were requested by my GP.

Debbyog1 do you mind me asking how old you are?

I'm on b12 injections and still suffer symptoms and get light headed quite often. I went to the doctors with it but they didn't really seemed concerned but I don't think any doctor I have been to has seen my symptoms as a whole. Just looked at each one and either dismissed it as nothing or trying to treat it separately

      Hi Beck

I am 60 now but the episodes of feeling dizzy and drained started about maybe 13-14 years ago. They seemed to happen about once a month so I put it down to menopause, it usually only lasted a day then I would be fine. It always started early morning and on one morning 10 years ago I got up went and sat on the loo. I had felt dizzy and the next thing I remember was waking up having face planted the floor. I spent 3 days in hospital. After I got my pacemaker I still had those occasional days but no more collapses. It was sometime after that I was diagnosed with rock bottom B12 and Iron. Had the injections ever since and more recently had Vit D supplements as I was borderline. I don’t take any medication at all and am generally well in all other ways. 99% of the time now I feel fine and have normal energy.

My cardiologist calls my issue Vasovagal syncope triggered by low blood.

To describe these episodes as feeling dizzy doesn’t really cover it. It creeps over me starting up from the back of my legs. I sense it’s starting before I feel it. It’s the weirdest feeling. Usually by the afternoon I feel achy like I have a bout of the Flu. I get feelings through the day which generally end or tail off by the evening. Sometimes that’s it or other times for 2-3 days I will get just the odd dizzy spell without the achy exhaustion.

How long does it take for a bird to fly across your head. How long does it take for a snake to move forwards you for that bite. The point being is it depends. I wouldnt say more than 3 weeks. 3 weeks is a magic number and time, when waiting for something.
