How Long Does Tonsillitis Last?

Hi. I'm 32 and currently going through an horrendous dose of tonsillitis. What started out on Monday as general aches and pains was followed by fever/shivers Mon night into Tue. WED saw some improvement ache wise but then the sore throat started. It's now Fri and I've got horrendous ulcers covering both tonsils, some 3 or 4mm across and it sure is painful.
I believe I've got everything I can from antibiotics (amoxicillin) to throat lozenges and mouth wash (difflam and difflam spray). However the unknown progression is worrying as I keep reading some improvement should be visible in 5 days after onset yet some day it can last up to 2 weeks!
A horrid week and a horrible illness. Any info/stories/comments would be appreciated.

Antibiotics - that however is good news because I have had enough tooth infections to at least be prepaired... you cant get any without a doctor / dentist and even tho its no big deal you still have to pay for a doctor & your prescription in the US. I have been so desperate before that I was considdering growing it!! I have always managed to find some solution eg. see a doctor when dentist tells me to wait 2 weeks for emergency or keep attacking it with a needle / razor till it pops then wash with salt water - emergency room treatment remains as always a real last resort but WORSE in the US!!!
Well antibiotics can be bought legally online and fish antibiotics are exactly the same as what the doctor prescribes you - they even come in a capsule (dont know why... not really as if you make the fish swallow tablets sometimes bigger than they are). You can also buy in any good pet shop... if you are allergic to penicillin you can even but other types you can take - check first what you can or cannot take first if its an issue.. I got these antibiotics a few months ago and they good for another 2 1/2 years - just dont even considder buying of ebay or something - make sure you buy from a reputable company.
I bought antibiotics because I used to get abcesses all the time and got fed up being ion pain and not able to do nothing but since I bought these tablets I have only taken them once before - that was when I broke my finger and a cut clearly got infected... If you buy them you shouldnt take them whenever you feel bad or down... also they do nothing for a cold - thats a viral infection and antibiotics wont work (its in the name)
good luck if you try looking online for antivirotcs lol - why not add other search terms like cure for the common cold
Anyway Fun and joy - I already have trouble speaking and swallowing and it isnt clearing up itself just getting worse so antibiotcs now are my treatment together with gargeling salt water and strangely using a toungue scraper actually does give me some releif for a little while. Also hot drinks and I going to buy some fruit this afternoon

Cant suggest nothing to help it taste better tho sorry - all I can say is if it really does hurt that bad then you just have to do it for a little releif.
As per another post above diclofeniac sodium (aka volterol) - yeah thats really good stuff I know... brilliant but the doc doesnt like to prescribe it often and the next best thing that you can buy that does the same just nowhere near as good is ibuprophane - I`m taking that too... should be noted that sucking an ibuprophane tablet actually does a good job of numbing your mouth lol

This is my ninth day I think.
From second to sixth day, I have this feeling that "if I swallow I know that it hurts" so I was scared of eating anything or drinking anything.
So I'm thinking what's the best for me to survive this. i'm hoping that this will help you when you're suffering too.
Soft boiled eggs with salt are the best protein and easiest to swallow. Because of its texture.
I drink ginger brew, rice tea, room temp water after I gargle mineral water with salt.
Survive with anti-inflammatory meds, antibiotics, and sleeping.
After I wake up every morning I take a cold bath, so my body is relaxed, after that I gargle three glasses of salt and water.
I drink cold but I think it's not effective, I switched to hot but I think that will irritate your throat too and your throat will become dry so try a room temp liquid it will help.
Pray, and just enjoy the pain! Dont let pain become the problem, let the pain become the challenge!
Im getting well now. I miss to eat lot.

Even attempting to swallow my own saliva is horrible, resorting to spitting in a cup because the pain was that bad.
I take around 6/7 paracetamols a day and they are doing NOTHING! I tried gargling with salt water but it didn't seem to clear it or reduce the symptoms.
Sleeping is a whole other story. I think in the past couple of days I've only managed 1h30 at a time.
I can't eat or drink, and I sweat so much in the night that my clothes have started to stick to me!
I took a look in the back of my throat to find a bunch of red spots all over the back of my throat, and a thick, red uvula ( little dangly bit in back of neck ) I can't see any signs of puss or white bumps but my tonsils are very swallow and red.
Seeing the GP later too see what he thinks it could be, and hopefully he'll give me something to ease the pain

Started on day 1 with sore throat and chills, then day 3 I went to walk-in clinic who just said to take painkillers as my tonsils are red but not swollen. I had seen 2 white spots on one tonsil, which I now reckon are ulcers?
Throat has become progressivley worse with day 4 and 5 spent in bed in agony trying to swallow. I finally went back to a walk-in clinic on day 5 and they gave me penicillin, although didn't bother to take any swabs and just said it's likely to be viral. More ulcers are trying to come through on tongue and lip, but I am hoping that my salt washes are keeping them at bay. Anything I try to drink (other than cold water) just burns all the way down.
Today (day 6) I have some white stuff on my uvula.. my tonsils will flare up swollen for a little while and then go back down for some reason. I have been gargling with crushed up paracetamol which seems to soothe it for a while. I still haven't eaten since day 3 and I lack sleep.
I just can't see an end in sight. I keep reading people's horror stories that it goes away then came back after 4 days, or they had it for 2 weeks! I have just started a new job and am already off ill. It's really badly timed but I have to remember it could be worse.
Sorry for the rant! I needed to get it off my chest. It's just so unfair

I had it for a year and a half non stop but still had doctors refuse to refer me to have them removed.
I'm currently going through my worst experience of tonsillitis I've ever experienced.
This is day 4.
Day 1:
It came on so suddenly. I was sitting watching television at around 10pm and I was fine then by 10:30, my throat was swollen, at least twice the size it was and I was cold and clammy to touch but I felt like I was on fire. At that time, I just put my head down, tried to ignore and went to sleep.
Day 2:
This morning, I woke up and I felt terrible. Throat was still swollen, still felt the cold/flu like symptoms and it was extremely painful to swallow. I avoided the doctors and went to work anyway. I suffered at work all day and stupidly took no medicine because I was genuinely scared to swallow. That night, I arrived home and the pain was so severe and I was so thirsty that I phoned NHS 24 and I was sent to the out of hours department at my hospital. The doctor AND the student doctor both looked me over which was infuriating because I wanted a solution quick, and it was taking too long. Eventually, they disappeared and spoke among themselves for at least 15 minutes whilst I waited. They came back with 5 days worth of Penicillin (liquid) and a prescription for another 5 days. Of course when I got home, the first thing I done was took the medicine and what a painful experience to swallow it down. I then went to sleep, woke up twice through the night which I was actually quite happy with.
Day 3: Still no food/water. Booked an appointment with the doctor because the out of hours doctor told me to, to talk about getting the tonsils removed. I explained everything to my doctor and he said even if he referred me, they wouldn't even look at it because of the length of time since my last bout of tonsillitis. This made me angry and I left. This day was terrible, everytime I smelt food or seen a drink that looked ice cold, it made me more hungry/thirsty. That night I wanted to sleep at my parents house because my mind was telling me that my throat might swell up and I might stop breathing(this is still concerning me). I had a mouthful of milk before bed this night as I needed to drink something. Worst. Decision. Ever. The pain was excrutiating. I went to sleep that night on the sofa, and my dad was awake a while on the chair just along from me. I barely slept that night, I can't quite guess why but I don't think when I'm sleeping, I'm swallowing so that's wakening me up I think.
Day 4(Today): Still taking my medicine four times a day, of course. Anything to get rid of this terrible pain and discomfort. I put a glass of water in the freezer to turn to ice to hopefully drink later in the day. I walked from my parents to my house and I felt like I was going to stop breathing with the walk, I was so tired, sore and swollen. At this point, I had a "weak" moment and I can say that no illness ever has made me feel that way. I'm sitting here at nearly half past eleven at night and I'm scared to sleep because the thought of my throat swelling and me being unable to breathe. I'm taking Honey and Lemon Lockets and they're nipping my throat yet it's kind of relieving in a weird way. I've not long taken my water out of the freezer and tried to drink some as it melted and even now, it's unbearable. I'm considering not sleeping tonight and calling the doctor in the morning and telling him that I honestly cannot deal with this.
In the past four days, I've had a sip of milk, a couple sips of water and a spoon of yoghurt which I choked on. I'm so scared of the malnutrition and dehydration side of the things and the thought of not being able to breathe.
I don't know what to do. I've had "weak" moments a few times in only four days. I just want to be able to drink water or swallow my own saliva.
I've broke bones in my spine from a fall in the past and I'd rather do that again because they give you morphine and the pain is gone almost instantly. There actually never seems to be anything for me that stops the pain when it comes to tonsillitis.
The only up side to this is, my partner has promised when I'm better to cook me my first meal. He's promised it'll be big, tasty and with lots of mayonnaise(because it's my favourite). Then a scrumptious dessert. I can't complain at that but I just wish it was now.
I know a lot of these posts are old but I thought I'd comment now, just because I can't sleep. Hope you guys all found solutions to your experience of this horrible illness.

Your post is 7 months old, but I decided to reply anyway. I hope you are all better now. Would you like to gives us an update?
If anybody has such severe tonsilitis, you have to go to the hospital! I've been admitted a few times, and it gets better, once you are in the hospital. They give you medicine and fluids through tubes, straight in to your veins, so you get hydrated, get painkillers, proper medicine and get to rest. Do not be scared to go to the hospital if you are geniunly feeleing that you might suffocate or have not be able to eat or dirnk anything for so long!
