How long for visual and balance disturbance to clear up after a vertigo attack?

Hello all,

can some one give a rough estimate about how long for visual and balance disturbances to clear up after a vertigo attack?

I had a very bad vertigo attack on the 28th of December and have been to see a very dismissive DR who I asked about being referred to a neurotologist as this is my second vestibular attack in 5 years.

The problem is I feel very wobbly and have poor gait and balance when I am out my vision is lagging even inside when I am in a quiet place.

I am also extra appreciative for any answers as my Brother has just died and is being buried on the 23 of this month I feel a strong amount of guilt about not getting to his funeral which unfortunately is a long distance by car, and I don't think I can handle it.

Thanks in advance,

K.

Riding in a car is hell for me. Usually after a spell of vertigo I feel dizzy for 3 months or so. This last one won't go away for me tho. Usually a little rehab and time helps. My docs all still think it will just go away. It's been almost 4 months and it's still pretty bad. Go upstate to a specialist end of the month. Don't know how I will be able to stand the ride. Will be over a hour if traffic and weather cooperate.

Hi, maybe look online for vestibular exercises. They helped me but I also was given medicine for it. Were you given anything medication to help with the dizziness?

Hi, you said that this is your 2nd bout of vestibular neuritis In 5 years. How long did your first episode last and did you have visual disturbances/dizziness with the 1st bout as well? I started with vestibular neuritis the end of June 2016. I did rehab in august. My balance is much better. I don't get dizzy but feel more of a rocking sensation. Mainly when laying down or when I'm tired or stressed. As for my vision.. it started to improve in September (so 3 months in) but still isn't back to normal. I'd say over the past 2 weeks it's noticeably better. I finally feel that maybe within the next 3-6 months it'll be almost normal. Maybe never 100% normal but I can drive now

Also, this is my 3rd possibly 4th episode of VN Over the past 18 years and by far the worse. I now have 33% unilateral weakness of the left ear. I think anxiety comes as a package deal. If possible, try to make it to your brothers funeral. Hopefully someone can drive you and you can relax on the drive. It's not easy but positive thinking does help and pushing through helps.

I HAD A VERTIGO ATTACK 8 YRS AGO, AND IT WAS A DUZZY. IT LASTED ME 13 WEEKS. NO DRIVING, ALWAYS DIZZY, LOST SOME OF MY BALANCE.

AND NOW I HAVE TO WATCH MY LONG DISTANCE DRIVING, 5HRS AR LONGER. NEED TO TAKE A FRIEND ALONG ON TRIPS. I HAVE INNER EAR

PROBLEMS DUE TO THE ATTACK AND IT WILL NEVER GO AWAY. SO I HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT.

Sincere condolences.  Only advice from my own experience is try as far as possible not to let this beat you.  Anxiety always worsens the symptoms.  Take deep breaths, simple but true.  Relax your eyes when you can from computer, tv strain.  Keep hydrated, try to cut back on too much sugar.  Hope you feel better soon, but push yourself as much as you can so that you learn to compensate for the dizziness by not succumbing to it and withdrawing from doing things.  Stay positive.

I like your positive advice I've been dealing with unsteadyness for almost 6 yrs now . I can't even tell you what happened ...it just did . By the time I hit 40..things changed . I feel so unbalanced ..swaying ...motion sickness ... neck and upper back shoulder pain. Headaches ...blurr vision . I have had so many tests done ...blood work ... M.R.I.s

And nothing. It's all day everyday. It's as if I'm on a raft in the middle of the sea . Its subtle but enough to make me feel like crying...staying in bed not that it helps but it beats being up and about . Anxiety ...depression yes because of this . My life..ha.. nothing like it was . But I push myself even though it feels like I'm going to fall over ...pass out even when I walk its unsteady and when I drive I've noticed i go to the right .its frustrating.. I cry..a lot . I'm taking topamax that neurologist have me for headaches... helps a bit . Scared taking meds

I know been struggling myself for 4 years now.  It took 2 years to get a diagnosis of silent mirgraines, plus also have BPPV.  Found nortriptyline helped for the first year relieving symptoms by almost 80% as thought I was going to have to give up working, but lately it has come back again.  I just woke up one day and couldn't stand. Fell to the floor and had to crawl around on the floor until it eased off.  Went to work and then had to take one month off work before feeling I was improving and then always stumbling around as though I was drunk.  It's hard to explain to anyone but as a doctor at work said in a nutshell 'it effects every aspect of your life'.  Somedays are worse than others, some weather affects me more than other days, I have no idea anymore what makes one day worse than another, but it all started at the menopause.
