Hi,
I have been diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia 6 months ago. Tegretol is working well for me but am wondering how long the drug is effictive for? I cannot really find anything online for TN. Am I talking months or years? Does anyone have any experience?

In my experience it works well for a while (different for everyone) and then it needs to be a bigger dose or something else needs adding like Gabapentin.
I'm taking Carbamazipine (tegretol), Gabapentin, amitriptyline and I also have propranolol to help with the migraine I get after a really bad TN attack. Propranolol has also been shown to be of benefit with TN. And I still have to get the medication reviewed as the pain is getting worse again.
Everyone has a different experience and different coping mechanism. You need to experiment with various things; hot water bottles, acupuncture etc. Some people find ice packs help, definitely not so for me!!
