How long must I wait

Hi

Has anyone in the Aberdeen area had a THR? How long were you on the waiting list for? Its driving me crazy - I'm desperate to get this op done and I get a different story from everyone I ask! Surgeon said 3-4 months from my appointment in February, but admissions then told me 5 months. Nurse at pre-op said it must be done within 12 weeks of pre-op but secretary says that's just a guideline. I was told in the beginning that I could have it done in Clydeside but as the surgeon told me 3-4 months it didn't seem worth travelling so far but now I wish I'd gone with it.

    Hi Rosie,

I'm in the Highlands (Raigmore) & ended up waiting so long (6 months) after my pre-op that it all had to be done again.  I then got bumped out of the hospital a few minutes before I was due to go into surgery, due to the number of emergency cases admitted over the weekend (so, if you're given any choice at all, try to avoid a Monday morning!).  I finally had the op 5 weeks later... a total of 7 months waiting.

I also was offered Clydeside but, unless you have your own complete travel support system, it's not really on ~ how would you get home (typically 2-4 days after the op? You also wouldn't know anything about the surgeon; & if you wanted to see him afterwards (as, you'll see from this forum, is often the case), you'd need to go all the way back down to Glasgow.

So ~ just keep perstering the hospital until they give in and give you a date.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your reply - even if it wasn't the one I was hoping for! I feel SO fed up with the NHS - I have been having pain for 18 months and been told categorically that I didn't have arthritis! It was only in February that they admitted that not only do I have arthritis but also that my hip does need replacing! I just want my life back! Hope you're doing OK now xx

You folks in the UK are so lucky when it comes to wait times.  I was diagnosed as needing both hips replaced as there was bone on bone in both.  That was in Jan. 2014  I saw the surgeon in April 2014 and finally was called in for the operation in March 2105.  11 month wait which is about the norm for Canada.

You poor thing Isabelle - you have my sympathy. I think a long wait would be easier to cope with if I knew how long it would be but this looking for the postmand every day and then being disappointed is doing my head in! Hope you're doing OK now xx

Hi Rosie , it's seems to be a post code lottery .

I first wenrpt to Dr 3 years before my op and was on list for 15 months they kept telling me it would be in ... Months .

The actual wait was more stressful than the op and  recovery.

    Goid luck

Thanks for your encouragement Mary - I agree about the wait being the most stressful - and it seems unnecessary - just NHS beaurocratic arrogance. It makes me cross beacuse if the surgeon had been honest in the first place, I would have seriously considered going to a hospital a 4 hour drive away. As it is, I have now waited the length of time he said it would be and I'm being told it could be another 2+ months and its now too late to change my mind about where I have it

    Hi Rosie

I'm in uk and had to wait 8 months from referral to op.

Pre med was done 3 weeks before 1st op date as it was over Xmas but that was cancelled due to black alert, next op date following week was also cancelled then they referred me to private hospital under NHS 2 weeks after that which wouldn't be cancelled.

      Hi rosie

Yes it seems a bit of a postcode lottery how long you have to wait and how bad you have to be before you get referred.

You can look on the website for your hospital and it should give you average waiting times, as you seem to have been given a lot of conflicting info which I don't think helps.

Rosie, I was done at Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank which I think is used by many Health Boards across Scotland to achieve their waiting time targets. There were patients from East Lothian, Ayrshire and even the Hebrides, there are on site hotel facilities for travelling patients free of charge dependant on distance etc. Don't  rule it out if you are desperate. Enquire about waiting times as I was told must be 13 weeks from referral to hospital. Good luck.

I live in stonehaven and Aberdeen said it would be over 34wks before I'd even get my 1st consultation! So I opted to be referred to another health board and got the spire murrayfield hospital in Edinburgh. Was seen there .March 4th had op 28th March. The drive home on day 4 post op was absolutely fine just stopped half way.

But I know it's not convenient for everybody but Aberdeen seems to have an extraordinary long waiting time.

I hope you get seen soon

Thanks Tracy. I had the option of going to Clydebank but turned it down as my surgeon said his waiting list was 3-4months but it now seems he lied!
