How long should I put up with dental pain?

I had root canal treatment on a lower molar 8 days ago. This was because of an abcess type pain I had been experiencing on and off for about 2 months.  The root canal wasnt straight forward, the roots were apparently hard to reach, my dentist wasnt sure if he had got to the bottom of one root and the whole thing was painful and roughly done I feel.. 2 days after the treatment I went back to the dentist as I was in excruciating pain, hadnt been able to sleep or at and painkillers incuding co codamol werent toching the pain at all. Dentist prescribed me Amoxicillin and Erythromycin (wthout even looking in my mouth) and said only other option was to pull the tooth. After a further 2 days of agonising pain, no sleep etc, I returned to the dentist again 2 days later (it was Friday by then and the weekend with no dentist open loomed ahead) and asked him to just take the tooth out - I literally couldnt bare it anymore.  I spent the weekend in what I would say is moderate pain from the extraction but in the background I still had the pain I had before, if that makes sense? I feel today as if my extraction pain has gone and its healing nicely but the pain that has never gone it seems is waking me in the night, still constant and nothing seems to be touching it... Its not quite as bad but still enough to make me want to bang my head against the wall!  I finished antibiotics yesterday... I dont know if I should just wait and see if it improves or if I should go back to the dentist or even go to the doctor for more antibiotics, I am literally at my wits end with constant pain. Thanks..

Hi Emma sorry to hear of your pain , you might have the start of tmj which I have had now for at least 5mths I'm thinking it's my teeth but in fact it's my Jaw causing the pain and a few yrs back I had a tooth removed and it took ages for the pain to go in my Jaw, not realising it might have been tmj causing probs with my teeth. Tmj is caused by anxiety while you sleep, I'm sure it's all hormonal , do you get sinus and ear probs as well?xx

Hi guys I to have had tmj it moves from 1 side to the other immense pain in teeth and back teeth are lose not good dentist has given me a mouth guard to use at night, this has helped but makes my mouth dry and that causes more gum problems I already have peritonitis, I had a hysterectomy 12yrs ago and the gum problem started about 6-7yrs and in the last 6mths tmj nasty. Have been with a chiropractor for 2 maths and he has helped a lot. Also magnesium is a great muscle relaxer and none for us get enough in our diet.

Hi Emma it sounds as though you have jaw pain try putting a hot wet flannel on the side it hurts that should help. And ask your dentist about tmj. Hope your feel better soon.
