How long to get a diagnosis of PMR?

How long is the average time to get a diagnosis of PMR please? My GP's just keep saying it's old age and OA! I have had all the symptoms of PMR for several weeks now but not GCA and my ESR , PSA levels appear to be normal so far. Can I insist for more tests or to be referred to a rheumatologist? I'm 76 this month. Any answers welcome on this subject. Also, do the rules of treatment change when we are 75 plus?

you definately have the right to be referred to a rheumatologist.

Tell your GP this is what you would like to do etc. My GP took so long , test after test, nearly a year.

I Actually asked for a referal because I lost confidence in my GP.

My rheumatologist is great and I feel each time I see her, that I have someone who knows what she is doing.

    Hi Ellie

I had my PMR diagnosed within 3 weeks! , that is after I was screaming with pain as i struggled to walk into the GP room , and screaming that I couldn't stand the pain anymore!! I've not heard of PMR until this point, and someone mentioned this by chance, and I had my ESR and CRP done , both were sky high at 135 / and 245 respectively !! i had the GP calling me which usually meant something bad and urgent .I was prescribed 30mgs of Prednisolone to start with, and within 2/3 days , my pain symptoms had eased! From there, I started this long and windy, and unpredictable road of PMR journey until now, nearly 6 years, with all the ups and downs and flares. I was discharged by the rheumatologist when I was down to 3mgs, as he thought i was on the way out of PMR! little did I know how wrong it was and he certainly did not wean me off Pred as I should , and I was TOO eager to get off Pred! And he wanted me to try Methotrexate which i did not agree to. Thank goodness for this forum, I've learned so much from here. Perhaps you could ask your GP to repeat the blood test, and give Pred a go , if it is PMR, you would feel the reduction of pain within 2/3 days. Good luck
