How Long until I get a diagnosis

Good morning, following a suspected gall bladder attack last summer I had a blood test that turned up some unexpected results;  it showed I had higher than normal iron levels.  since then I have had 2 more blood tests that again showed elevated iron levels.  My GP has now said they want to test me for Haemochromatosis and I am to have more blood tests next week.  Having looked up possible symptoms, I do have several including pain in my finger joints.   If the blood tests come back as positive, how long is it likely to be before further investigations occur, would I have to have genetic testing?

It sounds to me like the test your gp is going to run is the genetic test.

The genetic test normally takes 6-8 weeks to come back (if you are in the UK). They probably won’t do anything before as there are many reasons why your ferritin may be elevated and GPS don’t know a lot about haemochromatosis. You should have been referred to a haematologist or gastroenterologist by now. I waited 4 months for my appointment. A lot of them tell people it’s because they drink too much, even if they don’t.

Don’t worry too much as my ferritin was 1,500 and I’m relatively all right and my friend was 5,500. If you’re just in the hundreds it will want treating but there’s little danger. If your test comes back negative they will explore other reasons why your iron or ferritin is high.

In the US I got my genetic test results back in a couple of days.
