How long until it works?

I've been on sertraline for about a month and while I e had a few good days, I'm wondering when it will fully "kick in". Will I just wake up one day and notice? And about how many weeks until you noticed a difference? TIA

Hi there, I am assuming you are taking 50mg, which is the starting dose that is also the effective dose in many people. Some people do find they need 100mg though. Your GP will be best judge of this if you go and talk to them. I would expect them to want to follow you up within 2/4 weeks of commencing treatment anyway. It takes roughly 3 weeks to see the benefits. If you are experiencing no benefit at all, I would go back and see your dr and see if you need to take a bit longer or whether you might benefit from increasing dose to 100mg. It is not a one dose fits all drug. You will not ''suddenly feel great overnight'', more a case over gradually returning to normal function over a few weeks / months...maybe keep a diary so you can look back at previous week to compare.

Thank you Holly. I was started at 100mg and I do see sight differences. The diary is a great idea!

      Hi there,

Glad to be of help. Just recording things like mood that day on a scale of 0-10, if you slept well / how long, any panic attacks, etc each day at the beginning and end of the day should help you be able to quantify how well it is working. Just so you know, some people do need to go up to 150mg a day, a lot of GPs prefer psych to initiate this higher dose, depends on how well versed your GP is in mental health and this medicine. A psychiatrist would not have any concerns though if they felt you would benefit from going to 150mg, but only once 100mg has been given a long enough time to show how effective it is at that dose. Always worth remembering not every SSRI suits everyone, and some people do better on other SSRIs, so if you don';t get the required outcome then there is always an other option out there.

to be honest I don;t know how many people actually do feel 100 %, these drugs attempting to return us to normal functionning, but we all experience some degree of emotions and ups and downs....so maybe be realistic in your expectations ?...it could be that you would benefit from an inc'd dose, or swapping to sthg else, or that you are having a relapse that is not controlled at that dose. I would say if you are overly concerned to go and speak to your dr / mental health professional.

I don't think this is a relapse as I'm functioning like I used to be before . But what I'm saying is that I have this scared feeling of relapse and always think of my previous suffer that made me take this med then I start panic , only when my mind recalls my suffering . All this is new to me I never had this before in my life .

I understand how you feel , I know this process is not the easiest ! It takes a very strong person to take the first step to even getting help in any sort of way from a doctor and medicine . I thank god he's gifted doctors to have knowledge and help for us when we gave these chemical imbalances or tramaus in our lives . Think about it we are the only ones the ones that go through these things can understand what other really face when dealing with mental health . Anyways I started at 25mg steady dose I've been on it for almost 2 months it has helped me but there are those down moments when you are going to think of the MAin cause and its freighting all together ! But we have to remain strong and co time to fight the good fight of faith ! Try and distract yourself when that comes on ! Sudden thought take sudden action and get busy work out write color draw dance swim what ever in that moment and refocus
