How long until they start treatment on nhs for fibroids

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hi. I have has a massive fibroid for 2 years. In the last few months it grew to 12cm. I went to the dr and I was sent for another scan. I then returned to the dr who confirmed it had grown and has referred me to a specialist. That was about a 3 or 4 weeks ago and i havent heard anything since. I really want it sorted out but worried how long it's going to take. I feel so, so tired all the time - so much that I waste my day and just want to cry from feeling the way I do. I had a blood test and did not receive any results so assume that was all ok as the nurse said they would call me if they found anything wrong. I'm supposed to be getting married in November - I just want it fixed by then but there seems to be no rush. Can anyone tell me how long they had to wait for treatment?

I was diagnosed in February mainly because my anaemia was so severe. Had an ultrasound in March and started Esmya in April. Had a hysteroscopy in June and had the very large intruder removed on July 6th (TCRF).

Whether this will resolve my problems I don't know as the fibroid could regrow and I've been told if it does I will have a laparoscopic hysterectomy.

But for the moment I feel better than I have in over a year and my anaemia is much improved.

I really hope you get treatment quickly. My sister is marrying in November too and I really want to be well for that.

I know what you mean about the wasting energy crying - it feels so lonely doesn't it? These forums are great support. Good luck - keep pushing your GP mine fast tracked me as I was so low with blood loss.

    Hi Ali,

I have chosen to treat my fibroids with Embolisation. I saw the specialist at the end of May and was told it was a 8-10 week waiting list. I finally received the date, 10th August, but I'll be away on holiday so I asked for it to be rescheduled and the first available date was 5th of October. They will notify me if a cancellation comes up.

But I know what you mean about feeling tired, I am fed up of feeling worn out all the time, trying to stay awake after 8pm, terrible mood swings, extremely heavy periods, finding it hard to concentrate on tasks.

So I am hoping my procedure will be successful and I will start to feel much better and have a new lease on life.

I was diagnosed last Oct by having an ultrasound scan.I had a gynaecology appointment and a ct scan all very quickly and then I was sent to see a radiologist in Dec for embolisation process. He felt that a hysterectomy was the answer because one of my fibroids was 20cm.I saw my consultant in Jan,put on a 3 month course of Injections prior to the op and I had the op on April 7th.I got myself on the cancellation list for the ct scan and also a cancellation list to get to see my consultant in the Jan.Overall I was very impressed to how long the whole process took from start to finish.I wouldn't think that you would get anything done by November now but I wish you good luck.

I do think it's all a lottery with timings and treatments and who your consultants are and how you get treated.

It is such a pity that there isn't a definitive treatment to help this condition.

So many options to consider - and at a time when clear thinking isn't easy.

    Look after yourself. X

    hi ali,

cant help you as how long you wait these days for acknowledgement that you have a problem as i am in spain and have just got results 2 weeks ago from tests i had end of feb.

are you a young bride or somewhere in middle age.

the reason i ask is that fibroids grow mad just before your menopause and by the time they diagnose you need a hysterectomy, they've calmed.

this happened to me at age 43.

so i never got my lady gizzards taken out.

but i did go on HRT and had a wonderful life for 12 years.

so 5 years ago i got a polyps op and the surgeon said no more hrt,

so i feel as though i'm back in the menopause with pelvic pain and bloat.but too old to bleed.

no doubt its a fibroid they cant see.

also i sympathise with you waiting for that phonecall.

they always say they will ring if they find anything out of the ordinary, but there is always that doubt in your mind that they've forgotteh all about you.

i'd like to say its time to kick ass but i think you may have to resign yourself to a few more weeks wait.

they seem to think fibroids are not life threatening but its quality of life we deserve.

lets know how you get on.

I live in the North East, and went out of area (Nottingham), my second opinion was via my GP, however, I did pay for this consultation (York) who referred me to Martin Powell.  I had all of my procedures NHS, the only thing they were not happy with was Esmya which I had to argue about, and I won.  I had a UAE and it has been a success 12 months on.  I am 47 and my family is complete, if you are tired have you got anemia? you are probably mentally exhausted with the wedding also.

I was advised to have hysterectomy, my experience is do not be afraid to challenge people, it is your life and your body, whatever decision you come to, I had read really bad reviews about UAE, all i can say is I have my life back x

I'm from the stoke on trent area I've just had a hysterectomy, 2weeks post opp I'm feeling ok and mobile doing lite house work ie dusting, washing dishes. I can only pick the equivalent of a 3pint kettle n no hoovering for a while. I did have a embolisation done in 2012 fir a fibroid the size of a cricket ball. But did end up with the menopause being wrong side of 40.It was a sucess n shrunk it bk but in 2014,all the tiredness, bk ache etc returned I had a scan in January 2015 a fibrod had grown on the front wall of uterus size of golf ball. Tried esmya with hysterectomy agreed upon after a consult in March 2015for a few weeks but had to come off it disagreed with me.Then a cancellation came end of June, I had a stay in hospital for nearly 4days, district nurse came to my home to give thrombosis injections. All I can say bit of discomfort which is just the body healing. Everyone is different I dud use the gym fir 2 to 3 times a week for 2years. Which I like to think has helped me to get mobile n walk about sooner than I shud be doing. I hope you get the news you need soon to be able to move on, recuperate in time for your wedding in November .😀

Thanks everyone for your replies. Well I guess I just have to wait longer than I hoped- I am thinking to take the mini pill to ease or control the bleeding but have read conflicting advice on this. Has anyone else tried this. I am 40 and dr said they won't recommend a hysterectomy - I just want it gone 😕

The mini-pill made me bleed like fury. I went from normal heavy periods to a 29 day long clotting/ flooding. My consultant told me the hormones feed the fibroid.

The other drugs I was given to stop the bleeding made me clot huge golf balls! It didn't stop until I started Esmya.

This all made my anaemia a million times worse.

      Hi jaspy

May I ask a couple of questions?

Do you know which mini pill you took. I was prescribed micronor today - not sure whether to bother with it. also the dr said my haemoglobin levels were really low but borderline anemic but she didn't prescribe anything for that. Was a bit surprised. Do you think that's unusual?

      Thanks

      Hi Ali

I was given Cerelle. Bad news!

You can buy iron supplements over the counter. I use Spatone mineral water. Had a really bad stomach on iron tablets.

It can't hurt to build up your iron levels.

    Dear  Ali86305,

It took a great deal of time for my Doctors to find my fibroids.  First I was treated for anemia (2 iron pills a day), then sever asthma (4 inhalers), test run for possible hernia, 3 pap exams (came back okay), 1 internal probe, 2 CT scans.  This started in September and the fibroids were found in November.      I was not able to see a specialist until February and my surgery was done on March 3.

I had 7 fibroids with the biggest being 15cm  or  7” Long and 4” Wide.  I was lucky because I only had 2 small fibroids inside the uterus and the rest were growing off the outside like apples.

I know you are working on your wedding plans but make a checklist or plans for when you have your surgery.  (if I forget something I hope others will help you)

Find the best doctor, call for referrals

Take someone who can stay at the hospital with you for 2 days.

Make sure only you and your roommate use your bathroom (my roommate had two other people using the bathroom I ended up with a staph infection)  the nurses had to talk with them twice about hospital policy then instructed them they would be put out if caught using the bathroom again.    (this put me down for 3 weeks)

when you leave the hospital make sure they give you a stomach support wrap (it will be a life saver—even sneezing can put your back)

Make sure your pain medicine is adequate

Keep walking and stretching to increase your strength

Finally my doctor did a bikini cut, no staples, and now the cut can barely be seen
