Hello, just found this discussion. What a good idea. I have been waiting 21 weeks from referral and am due to have my first hip replacement next Monday(13th). I have severe arthritis in both hips and will need to have the 2nd hip replacement later in the year. The greatest delay was at the beginning , getting the initial appointment with the consultant, I had to wait form September 23rd to December 15th from referral, since then things have gone smoothly although the pain is really bad and my mobility is very poor. Just hope that the rest of the experience goes well. Margih I hope you get sorted soon.

Hello, I just had hip replacement 3.5 weeks ago. Doing great. I also will need the other one done in a few years. We don't have that wait in the states. Socialized medicine is a bummer with that waiting. Glad we are fixing Obamacare which is a disaster. You will be glad you did the surgery, in fact very glad. I am walking normally without a cane. Pain is almost completely gone except for some minimal quad pain. I had the anterior approach and I can't imagine it being any better.  Good luck.

You don't have to wait in the UK if you have access to private medicine. But not everybody does.

?You are welcome to comment on your own countries policies. "Socialised medicine" in the UK is one of the best health services in the world, and still challenges paid for medicine in terms of the quality of care received - so please don't comment on our medical systems. In the UK we pride ourselves on the fact that everyone can access the medical treatement they need, irrespective of economic status. Yes, there are waiting times because of the volume of demand. Yes, there are huge pressures on services due to the volume of demand. But I am proud that the response of the British people is to argue to fix the service - not reduce the demand. If everyone in other countries had medical systems that provided people with the medical care that they needed, they too would be overloaded. But the answer is not to have people who cannot afford the treatment at all.

?I respect that you may have your own opinions about policies in your own country, but please don't presume to criticise those of my country. It isn't a "bummer" - it is something we are immensely proud of.

That is really positive news. My date has now been cancelled (tele call yesterday) so feeling a bit devastated. I know it can't be helped because emergency traumas and life - saving surgery must come first but it doesn't help my pain or my anxiety! No revised date given so I live in hope and pain!

      Kind regards, Jane.

I too am proud of our NHS. I have lots of friends who work in the system they are all very dedicated but at the same time very frustrated that they are unable to do more for patients due to lack of funds in certain sectors.

      Kind Regards, Jane.

I'm sorry your surgery had been postponed, but you are right - emergencies come first. Although slightly different circumstances - I needed emergency hip replacement but couldn't have it due to a broken ankle complicating things - I know what it is like to be waiting and in pain. I had osteonecrosis and the hip bone was actually breaking up! But it will end for you. It seems like it won't, but it will. Hopefully soon. Good luck

Yes, it would be great if we had more funding for some things. I think the whole of the public sector feels like that. The demand is there but it just cannot be met. I doubt that we could ever meet demand - the pace of medicine developments and techniques now, it's hard to keep up. And even private medicine had caps - what it considers too expensive to provide for the results. The NHS isn't perfect. Nothing is. But it's something to be proud of, and the people who work there are amazing!

Ok, if you call waiting a year for a hip replacement , good, then I see what you mean. I've worked with Dr.'s from UK who say the system is a disaster. Let alone the Taxes you pay over there. But each to his own. And yes , its my opinion. Anything I say is my opinion, just assume that. I'm not politically correct , sorry. Anyway , hope your surgery goes well. Tootles.

So sorry to hear that. Postponed, Nice!  Its not the emergencies, trust me. Its the socialized medicine beureaucracy. We have that issue with the VA here, but our regular health care system/private does not postpone longer than about a month due to demand. Beth doesn't get that. Heee!  But anyway it will be worth the wait. Chronic pain is so depressing and when you are free of it you don't realize just how miserable things were. I have just been amazed how well things are going for me. Everyone is different, but the reports I get on this end about hip replacement are mostly VERY GOOD> Blessings.

    Hi Margi

I went on the waiting list in July 2016 & had my hip replacement on 1st October 2016.  I went in on the morning of the operation which was a Saturday and I was discharged on the Tuesday so three days in total. Before I had the hip replacement  I was in absolute agony. I returned to work after three months.  I returned to work after three months    I had lots of physio following my op which really helped plus I did lots of exercises myself.  I live in Kent but originally I came from the north-east are you by any chance going into South Cleveland Hospital?

    Best wishes Sara

Due to have my first hip replacement on Monday, this date has been booked for over 2 months. Just had a call from Leicester NHS Trust to say that all elective surgery has been cancelled for next week due to state of emergency. Very disappointed as already been waiting 23 weeks from referral. No future date given yet. Absoulutely nothing I can do about it except wait.

      Best wishes Jane.
