How long will this last

I'm miserable. I've never experienced pain like this in my life. It's been one week, exactly, since the surgery. Total right hip arthroplasty. I have my post operative appointment Thursday, so more will be revealed. I am super swollen and bruising all over the back of my leg. Can someone tell me about how long they went through the same. Seems like many people are doing great, but each individual is different. The pain I had before the surgery seems to be gone, but the new stuff (post-op pain, bruising, and swelling) is the pits.

Hi Heather, I'm a little bit ahead of you i had my surgery 15th Dec, I also had the same - unbelieavble swelling - my right hip was 20cm bigger than my left -  and I bruised from waist to knee.

I had a skin infection post surgery and fever to go with.

When I finally got home from hosp I felt like I had just swapped one kind of pain for another, I couldn't sleep couldn't settle I was just miserable. I saw my surgeon a few days ago and he's given me pain relief for nerve pain and that has helped massively.

I hope your post op goes well and they can find something to help you. I am now two weeks post and the swelling is nearly gone, but the bruises are still very colourful!

    Good luck

I just had a total hip replacement done December 28th. I don't feel insane amounts of pain but I do feel pressure and my leg feels funny when straight.. it needs to lean slightly to the one side.. sometimes even while walking it feels sideways altho it's not. I had a spinal with long acting morphine injected into my spine which i feel has made this pretty easy. Today tho I sat up alot and do feel the pain in my groin area and it has me slightly worried but the more I read online, it seems pretty normal. I sleep alot which is awesome cause I haven't been able to in years. I just find laying in bed to get the right spot is hard. How long have you guys used a pillow under ur leg? How high do u need to rest kinda sitting up?

I can promise it gets better. I had mine Dec. 7. Spent 6 nights post hospital in respite care and couldn't get comfortable. Slept in my back with pillows and constantly had back pain. Hardly slept at night. Did have naps. Have been sleeping on non operated side with a pillow between my legs for about a week. Discomfort gets better every day. Do your exercises. Ask folks on the forum for advice. And take care

      dear starr,

Happy new year to you and warm welcome to this wonderful hippies forum...

goodness, you are just fresh out of surgery and what you feel is very normal ..My leg felt like an alien appendix for about a week .

your body is healing and sort of accepting the foreign object and this might cause all kinds of feelings ...

Great that you sleep a lot ... a lot of healing is taking place when you are sleeping .. don't worrry about it ..

I like sleeping with a pillow underneath or between my legs to get relief for my back ... finding a comfortable position will come soon, darling ...

keep doing the ankle rotations and foot pumps -

which approach did you get ?

come back here anytime you have a question or concern, okay .. better yet, start your own discussion and we will be happy to respond to you ...

      big warm hug

      renee
