Hi jay I was same went to physio appt and she said def drop to one . I realised when she showed me that I was using sticks to weight bear rather than new hip . So about 2 weeks went to one making sure I was just using sticks for balance and not support . But there dont seem to be any rules we are all different and I'm sure if you try dropping to one and it's not right you will soon know. Good luck sounds like you well on way I certainly turned a corner after week 2

Yes at week 2 you should be OK on one stick. The new hip is capable of weight bearing from the start. I found it a lot easier once I could start doing things for myself (so did my wife!) Just take it easy and listen to your body.

    Hi jay,

I was down to 1 crutch after 2 weeks with both my hip surgeries. It certainly makes life easier, having one hand free.

I'm able to do more tasks around the house now which makes you feel more like you are getting back to normal. I'm 3 weeks post op today and can manage short distances with no crutches at all, which I could never have contemplated a week ago. Every week brings new triumphs to be proud of and they all bring us that one step closer to be able to walk, crutch and pain free.

Try pottering round indoors today to see how you do on one crutch (crutch needs to be the opposite side to the operated hip, no one told me that and I struggled for days using one crutch on the same side as the operated hip). Your body will let you know if it's ready and how stable you feel will tell you if you are able to continue with just one crutch.

    Good luck.

    Ali xx

I'm in the US and I started out with a rolling walker. I graduated slowly to a cane at about 2 weeks. By slowly I mean there were days that I felt I needed a little more support than others. Also, the walker had two wheels in the front and two legs in the back. My PT said its more for stability and to protect your new joint. I was adamant about losing the walker but she cautioned that it's very temporary and she'd rather not have me fall and injure my brand new joint. So, I feel you. Just be patient. I'm 6 weeks out and I only use my cane/walking stick when I'm out and about shopping, waking, etc. Hope this helps a little.

    You are doing phenomenal!

      Thank you

It is fantastic that you are doing so well at 6 weeks .

I am counting in weeks rather than days so today is 2 weeks which is a third of the way lol

Next week I will be half way

      Keep improving x

      You're welcome,

You are doing great. It's all up and up from here on out! I love this forum because we can all give support, compare notes and follow each other's progress. Even though no two are the same, if you have a question or concern, you're sure to find another fellow hippie who has some insight or a similar experience. smile

Keep on getting stronger and more mobile!
