Condoms reduce the risk of HSV-2 sexual transmission by 50% (some say only 30%). It is also worth noting that new infections are more infectious than usual, as new infections shed a lot more (first few months to a year, as your body adjusts).

Thanks for your reply Felis, i actively follow your answers on others post too. I really appreciate you are helping out people with so much detailed answers. i am really frustated because i am just 27 years old and have a genital HSV 2 which is not yet detected because its a new infection. I have googled a lot about vaccination too but couldnt find solid answers.I feel there is something shady about the whole vaccine thing as this is 2016 and this disease is affecting 50 millions people in US alone,

I think the problem is that HSV has been around for a very long time, even before modern man, so it has had time to evolve and adapt in order to avoid our immune defences. It is quite a crafty virus and while a lot is known, there are still some unknowns, and traditional vaccines don't seem to work against it. There have been various attempts over the years, but none were successful, although there are a few therapeutic vaccines currently in the pipeline that have shown initial promise. It is frustrating, however, I agree!

Regarding transmission, gHSV-2 luckily does not pass with each and every contact, and in established, discordant, monogamous, informed, hetero couples, M>F transmission was found to be 10% per *year* if sex during outbreaks is avoided. Daily suppressive meds knocks that down by 50%, and condoms by another 50% (or 30%), so 5% and 2.5% per year, respectively. However, the fact the couples were established and one had managed to avoid infection for a while makes a difference (could be somehow resistant). New infections (known to shed a lot more) and new relationships thus can't be held to the same transmission risk percentages, which are undoubtedly higher, but that's a more thorough breakdown of the only such study done for your reference. And thanks for the kind words, btw!

Hi Felis, you seem very knowledgeable on this subject. I would like to ask you a specific question.

I had unprotected vaginal sex with a girl, then 3 days later took the HSV-2 antibodies blood test (IgG) and it came back as positive. Is it possible in just 3 days time for the antibodies to develop and show a positive result on an IgG blood test?

I've had unprotected sex with multiple partners this year, but I'm trying to figure out if the HSV-2 I contracted was from this most recent girl.

Again, thank you in advance for any information you might know and can share. I've tried to research this question multiple times and cannot find any definitive answer.

I haven't taken any suppressive medicine at all .. And my ex hasn't had any thing from me ...

    I don't know it just depends ..
