How much walking is enough or to much.

HI Hippies

I have been reading your posts on your walking progress and am amazed at how much some of you are able to do.  I am almost 5 weeks post op and walk every day on my crutches, but it is just up and down the road a few times going a bit further every day.  Compared to some of you I don't think I am nearly doing enough walking, my fitness level was bad before the operation due to not being able to weight bear and walk so that may be why my progess seems slower.

I was given the phyio exercises, which I do every day, but was given no indication of how far I should be walking or if I should go on when I get pain.  Just wondered what your thoughts are on this.

Thank you for your advice everyone it is much appreciated.  I will continue slow and steady come rain or shine.

There is no automatic physio aftercare here in Wales, the routine here is after the 6 week check if the surgeon does not feel your progress is good you are then referred by him for physio.  If the progress is up to standard you continue with the next set of exercise sheets on your own for weeks 6-12.

They probably do this as a money saving incentive, but the exercise sheets are very basic and there is no advice on walking, swimming or cycling at all.  So grateful for this fantastic website and all you knowledgeable hippies.

      Hi toto

I know what you mean, I'm exactly the same as you, I'm 10 wks po today, have had 4 physio sessions and told to continue with the exercises at home.  Again, when I read the progress of some on here, I think I'm not doing enough  I'm still using a stick to walk and I try and do a little more each day, although no swimming or cycling!! 😱😱😱

At my consultant appointment he just said, that we' re all in a marathon and not a race and in a year everyone is the same and echoed the words of most people on here " listen to your body and do what you can"

Although I'm beginning to get a bit frustrated now, and boredom has well and truly set in, I know that it's not forever and there is a glimpse of normality!!!

So grateful for this forum knowing that I'm not alone👍👍👍

Good luck in your recovery and just keep doing what your doing 😃😃😃
