How often should you see a physiotherapist

Hello, i am 46, just had anterior THR 11 days ago.  I had two 1/2 hour sessions of PT in hospital on day 1 and 2 and then at home on day 6.  However that was when i could barely walk on crutches for 5 minutes every hour.  Now i feel much better and can walk without crutches for short distances (10-20 yards).  Should  i still walk on both crutches? And do i need new physio excercises?  All i do now is side- sweeps with straight leg when standing up (100/day) and knee drawn to 90 deg up while lying in bed ( also 100/ day).  Is that enough?

Hello BK. I had 6 PT while in hospital then sent home on day 4 with the relevant exercises ticked in my book.  I have done them religiously everyday and  increased my walking.  I am now 6 weeks and still using support while out but managing indoors without.  Would not be in a hurry to ditch crutches/sticks as there is a lot of internal healing going on. I walked 3.5 miles non stop today with 2 walking poles and body is letting me know tonight. I have another 2 weeks before my follow up and still taking all the precautions.

bear in mind everyone is different and operations are different depending on what the surgeon is up against.  With me osteoporosis so bones very fragile hence my 8 week recovery.  I would take advice from your PT as there may be a reason you have been given only a few to do. I was told to walk daily and listen to badly regarding ditching support.  At 66 I am careful as do not wish to sustain a fall

    hope this helps

    Hi bk

I just had a couple of 10 minute sessions of physio in hospital and a booklet with exercises in to do at home, the 2 you've mentioned and also standing on unoperated leg and lifting knee up and swinging back and forth, however due to the pain in my unoperated leg I couldn't stand on it so I tried but didn't do the exercises regularly, however I've just walked and walked as my operated leg is good and the pain has now gone from my unoperated leg. I think people worry too much about physio, I'm 14 weeks and walking around unaided with no problems.

Hi BK - as said, listen to your body -- I have some kind of love/hate relationship with Physical Therapy ... I also had 6 session while in the hospital and had therapy scheduled for once a week at home - my problem is that my unoperated leg is weak and painful in the groin , not giving me the confidence to put my weight on it ..I am 6+ weeks post-op - How many session are covered by your insurance ? At 2 weeks post-op I got over-conident and did way too much ... eager to push myself .... Your body will let you know ....

Hi,  I would keep on with the crutches for a time yet, especially when you go out, then perhaps after a couple more weeks, try just using one crutch when you go out.  I would not give them up completely.  It takes a long time for our insides to heal properly and I would not risk it just yet.  I would try standing on one leg alternately for 20 seconds on each leg, doing 5 at a time at first, then graduating to 10.  If you have stairs, try stepping up and down on the bottom stair, up with the good leg and down with the op leg for 2 minutes at first and then increase it by 30 seconds or a minute when you get used to it.  Take it slow at first.  Good luck.

Hi BK, I also had anterior and did physio for 4 weeks with a therapist coming to my home 3 days a week ( my insurance luckily covered that ) once that was up I was mostly encouraged to walk increasing the distance, and yes I still do those stretching exercises I was given during the first month. For me personally and I know everyone recovers differently and at their own pace it has been enough for me. I did add using a stationary bike at 6 weeks and that has helped loosen up the thigh. I am going into my 8th week of recovery now and am walking unaided.
