How on earth is this drug legal and being prescribed for so many different reasons?

This is a horrible drug.  They are telling patients to keep taking more and more yet people are complaining about the side effects, which are brutal even if they stop taking the drug.  How is this not a class action law suit yet as so many people have suffered so much from it?  They are dishing this out like candy and if you don't get relief, then they tell you to take more, which just makes things worse and worse.  How are doctors being coaxed into promoting this filth?

Funny , you posted this today. Not funny by ironic. My doc prescribed this for me about 4 months ago for insomnia. A month later , I told him it hasn't helped. So , he told me to take 600mg instead of 30pmg. So , I did for about 2 months. Didn't help. I figured if I told him 600mg didn't help he would simply tell me to take 900mg. So I didn't say anything about it. I went back to taking 300mg. No side effects from cutting back though. Tonight will be my first night without taking any.

The biggest reaso I'm not gonna take it anymore though is because since I started the Gabapentin my blood work numbers have changed. Not for the better though. Don't know if Gabapentin has anything to do with it , but makes me suspicious. My Thyroid TSH went up and my bun went up. Can't find any info about that but guitting anyway. Many many people on here complain about withdrawals. Hopefully I don't get any. Apparently the doctors get a raise when they prescribe Gabapentin.

Jessis, wanted to say that I've gotten a lot of false positive hypoactive thyroid results. It is a side effect of gabapentin. I'm currently taking steroids for Addison's disease an auto immune disease. A very high dose for over 2 years. It started with low functioning adrenal glands which is Addison's. I truly believe that gabapentin has to do with My current steroid intake. I've never had problems with adrenal before. The steroids with the gabapentin have destroyed My health. When I began taking gabapentin 5 years ago I was taking 3 meds. I wasn't paying attention because I just couldn't think and found myself taking 22 different meds until I said this has to stop. It took the first of many close death calls to make Me realize this though. Every system in my body has been compromised. My lungs are trashed from so many upper respiratory infections...side effect. Still My Doctor doesn't understand why I feel need to stop taking gabapentin. I'm looking for new Primary but I wondered if He wanted Me dead or whatever He has been told is so wrong that He can't see the results of what that poison will do to somebody. Possible Doctors will wake up if They start getting sued!  Glad you stopped taking it when You noticed a change. Your the best health advocate for You. I will never take another med without researching it first! Thanks! Sherri

Anyway , I hope the thiroid numbers are due to gabapentin. Been off for 3 days. No side effects so far.

You make an interesting point..... I would never have taken it ( and I have a degree in pharmacology ) if I had known the side effects to be long lasting beyond having stopped this medication ! Instead i had a chronic pain clinic dr telling me to persevere and keep taking it.... in my case nerve pain is v hard to treat but this medication needs a serious review

I am on Gabapentin-2700mg with no side effects. It works for me and I hope it continues to. If I have to stop it I may experience side effects but will cross that bridge if and when I get to it!

I took it at a dose of 1800 mg a day for many years and for the first 12 months it was a “ magic bullet “ on treating the nerve pain .... it was only at 1 yr in I started suffering short term memory loss and impaired cognitive function, transposing letters as I wrote words , it was like getting early onset Alzheimer’s .... I felt like the character in the film / book Still Alice . I hope you never suffer from this side effect as it’s evil

Class action lawsuits were settled like twice around 2004. I've looked this up too. I had chronic back pain and started this medication 5 years ago. My pain and ncreased into pelvic and lower abdomen. Not one Doctor suggested and all actually denied it could be gabapentin. As My health has declined. It seems I have symptoms of almost all the side effects. It's a horrible nasty drug. As I'm slowly withdrawing off this non addictive drug the harder the withdrawal is!  The lower the amount that I take it gets worse. No opiate benzo withdrawal combined can be as bad as this!  That last max a couple of weeks this is ongoing!  The upper respiratory infections have now included chronic infections. No antibioticshardky work on me my recent menegitis was the worse so far. I pray for Everybody on this medicine. All for money it has been found that there were a bunch of lies made up about what gabapentin can be used for! Sherri

Please don't let it sneak up on you!  Side effects will happen. Memory goes, cognitive, blood work ups. I completely stopped once and My Doctor convinced Me to take it again. It's a tricky drug and you really don't realize what it's doing to You. When withdrawing then you really don't sleep!  I suggest anyone that starts it to have Someone ready to make any and all medical and personal decisions for Them! Sherri

You're right about the lawsuits!  Neurontin basically re-named as Gabapenten or Lyrica but all the same rubbish and same brutal strangle hold on people once they start taking it.  This borders on evil.
