    Hi

On 9 Feb I had mild bunion reduction, hammertoe and mallet toe surgery. I have been inactive for 4 and 1/2 weeks. My husband does not drive so I have relied on friends and family when they can to give me an airing! I am a rambler, lawn bowler and gym enthusiast and 68 years old and going mental. Today I have the pins out. Any fear is outweighed by the desperation to get moving again. I think the procedure is 2 weeks post op healing and walk only with medical shoe to the Loo, then 2 weeks with less bandage but still with medical shoe and here I am... Having a bath is a weekly desperate ritual. I went to my daughter's house to stay as her taps are round the other way! Success I had a bath every day. Showering would be great but no bag goes over the medical shoe sufficiently to allow you to confidently stand without slipping. I will let you know later today how I get on as I must convey to the consultant that I am like a blob that needs to move.

You can walk when you get you shoe, however be ver careful, I wasn't, I tripped and broke my big toe two weeks after my operation.. I'm due to have  my toe dome again and have my second toe used... My toes were not fused during the first toe, but you need to be very careful xx

    Hello Sandra

I am just back from seeing the consultant. I was so distressed to hear I have to wait another 2 weeks before I will have no bandage and no medical boot. It will be 6 weeks and 2 days from op that I will be able to "walk" in trainers. Having the pins out was not nearly as painful as I imagined. In fact no big deal. The open will take 2 weeks to form a scab. I am told I can walk as long as I am comfortable in my bandaged foot with medical boot. I am so not comfortable! I need car transport everywhere. Tomorrow I will walk round Waitrose. I have been told to manoeuvre my big toe back and forth. Well I am so ready for 24 March now. Freedom day.

Hi, I am going for my bunion operation on my right foot.  Just thinking do i really need to wear those "boot" or "medical shoe"? can I not wear some sandals and have my foot bandaged? can't imagine wear a "boot" and the other foot in my regular shoe.

I remember i did ask the doctor how soon can i get back in to work, he said 1 or 2 weeks !

    What are your thoughts?

      Hi Alice

I had bunion op on both feet and they were bandaged and I was given sandals with Velcro straps to wear. After ten days the bandages were removed and I had dressings and Velcro splints on with the sandals. I could no way have gone back to work after two weeks, you need to spend a lot of time resting with your feet raised and even keep them up on a pillow at night.  It all paid off because I now have no swelling at all 14 weeks post op.  I did not go back to work until three weeks ago as there are a lot of stairs in my building and no lifts.  I started to walk more and more each week after about 6 weeks but still found stairs difficult until 10 weeks post op (probably won't be so long for you with only one foot being done).

Good luck with it, I'm really glad I had mine done.  Don't get bored, there's always another book to read or film to watch, make the most of it!

Gosh Alice perhaps your sort of op only affects the side of the foot. I had that plus hammertoe and mallet toe done so boot it has been. Over one month now in it and with pins out today I go to Waitrose hobbling round for my first bit of exercise! Let us know your outcome
