How to avoid winter illnesses?

Every single winter I get very sick as soon as it gets barely cold outside. The first day of the first cold front I come down with bad sinus/upper respiratory infections that come and go all winter. Last year was especially bad as I was sick with bronchitis and chronic sinus infections for at least 4 or 5 months straight. After the illness finally went away I was left with a constant thick, clear, sticky post nasal drip that has yet to go away, though it’s been about 6 months since my last illness. So I have 2 questions: 1. Why could I still be experiencing constant thick mucus after so long, and what can I do to get it to go away? 2. What can I do to help ensure I don’t get sick this winter? It is especially important that I don’t get sick at all this year because I just started school inside a cancer hospital and I absolutely cannot go to school sick around immunocompromised patients, but I also can’t miss an excess of school. I already do the obvious, as far as taking a daily women’s vitamin, maintaining good hygiene, and constantly washing my hands. But it’s as if the second colder temperatures hit my skin, my immune system just gives up. Are there any drastic measures I can take to boost my immune system this winter?
