How to deal with pain before tkr?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi. I'm awaiting right knee tkr until at least June. I had had a cortisone shot in my knee so I cannot have the surgery before then. It is getting more painful to do daily activities and is starting to worry me and frighten me about how I'm going to deal with this till at least June. I've been taking ibuprofen which basically does nothing. Has anyone had success with some medication or any method to help with this pre-surgery pain? Thanks.

    Hi Neilzie

I was taking two ipubrofen and 2 Zapain (codeine and paracetemol mix) 3 times a day prior to surgery. Hope that helps. Good luck it’s worth it

Thanks for your response. My doc called in a prescription for Tramadol today, haven't taken it yet.

If that doesn't help, will keep yours in mind to ask doc about.

Have you tried Voltarol Gel ?. Some find it very helpful. You could ask your doctor for more effective pain relief. There is better than over the counter pain relief medication available on prescription.

Using it now with lidocaine every hour. Not working. Going to try smoothenol from Amazon as soon as it arrives.

Thanks David. I have not heard of that but will look into it.

Doc called in Tramadol for me today but haven't started it.

Pls think about this surgery.  I was a fool, I had other health issues.  Cryotherapy if you have arthritis or laser light therapy, ozone shots.  I would try anything and everything if I could do it over again.   Stem cell. If you have arthritis, in my case bad hip, and bad back. If you are over weight, you will have more problems.  Are you an exercise person? If you think you are slow now, think again!  Look at your overall health for someone your age.  I am thin, I exercised, I have arthritis and an autoimmune disease which is preventing me from healing.  If you have back problems, it can affect your knee.  Please think about this!

Thank you, Carol. I'm a 63 yr.old active woman (gym training, tennis, biking.) I'm not overweight. My last tkr was successful as I expect this one to be. But I have had more pain in this knee pre-surgery than the other.

Cryotherapy! I wish I never had surgery.  A friend of mine did stem cell and is really happy. I have an autoimmune disease and never had a problem with surgery until this happened.  I am thin, eat extremely healthy, no drinking, no pain meds, never smoked so I thought I would recoup but sure hasn’t happened yet despite trying to get back in shape.  I have a lot of arthritis!

I went to a pain management specialist and they prescribed hydrocodone for my pain. I have since had my tkr and taking higher dose of hydrocodone.

The pain is awful. I hope you find help.

You can ask the doc for some Tramadol (Ultram).  Very mild opioid; could help.  Also get some Voltaren Gel (RX in the US)...GREAT topical anti-inflammatory and painkiller.
