How to ease ankle pain in a foot orthosis?

Last week I broke my V metatarsal with displacement. I was told the surgery was needed but by the time I get the appointment I am supposed to have my leg in a foot orthosis(air walking boot). The problem is that the boot causes pain in my ankles (there is also a slight redness on the ankle skin). When I told it to my doctor he just said that I had to bear the pain because this is still the most comfortable solution. He also didn't allow me to loosen the boot when the pain is occuring. However, at night the pain is so unbearable that I must loosen it when my foot is not moving. So is there any solution how to ease this pain?
