How to eat and deal with gastritis, help?? :(

Hey guys hopefully I'm doing this right since I'm new here. So, i was recently diagnosed with gastritis the other day & I am having the worst time ever trying to eat with this. Honestly. I feel full most of the time; it's like this one spot in the kinda upper middle part of my stomach. It makes it so hard to eat because I feel like I just ate AND I also feel nauseous sad. It sucks. I was put on Pepcid 20mg twice a day & last night was my second night taking it. I am also so lost as what to eat & what to not have because I hear mixed answers. I know I'm supposed to have bland foods but specifically which ones? Also, I was told no coffee or tea even if it was decaf. I'm used to having either one for breakfast so any suggestions on what hot drink to have now? Can I have soy or almond milk? Would having for example an almond croissant be bad? I would grab one of those for breakfast too. I'm only 24 & this is honestly depressing. I feel so sick I don't even want to go out anymore because of the nausea & yeah in general I feel ill. I would greatly appreciate the help of anyone who has gone through this or is going through this. By the way, as I keep taking my medication will the full sensation and nausea subside? My appetite also sucks sad, will it return eventually as my stomach heals with time? I know the stomach is sensitive so this isn't going to be a walk in a park but I would like to start feeling better in a week or two hopefully. Oh and how far apart should I eat? I try to keep it 2-3 hours since I feel full all the time so hopefully this is okay. Thank you so much for your time!!

Hello lovely I feel your pain! I'm only 20 and going through the same thing. No caffeine! No alcohol no cigarettes! No tomato or anything with it in like a sauce. And obviously nothing spicy. I find cantaloupe melon and avocado really good they never burn my stomach or make me feel sick. Brocolli is also good but in small portions because it can produce gas, drink plenty of water. Chamomile tea at night can help soothe your tummy and its gentle enough to drink. Hope you get on the road to recovery soon X

Finally a response! Thank you so much for taking the time to read this whole thing, just realized how long it was! So, for breakfast I should probably have for example, a cup of chamomile tea with maybe some toast? I really need some meal ideas because I feel like I've been eating nothing the past two days sad. Are you on any medication at the moment? Also, would you recommend having soy or almond milk? Some people say no dairy at all but this wouldn't really be dairy so I'm wondering if it's okay? Also did you ever get the same full feeling I had or no? This is torture. Hopefully you're right and I do recover soon! Thank you.

It's fine! Everyone on here understands how frustrating it is to have these illnesses! I stick with almond milk but do occasionally have normal milk and it doesn't effect me at all but almond milk is better for you and less fattening! You shouldn't eat anything deep fried or greasy! Chicken and rice with some veg is always a good meal. I don't feel full all the time but I do feel very full after eating only a small amount which is different for me because I could eat a lot before all this.. Now my portion sizes are very small but when it comes to gastritis it's recommended you eat small portions throughout the day instead of meals. So I have very small plates of food and snack on fruit and veg and seem to be fine! My condition is more complex than just gastritis so I'm not sure if everything I do will work for you but those are the tips I've gathered along the way. If you're going to have toast try smashing some avocado on it instead of having butter, butter isn't great for you! X

I forgot I'm not supposed to have butter so I will probably smash some avocado like you said! I'm not supposed to put pepper on it, if anything very little salt. Oh perhaps having some oatmeal would be fine too right and saltine crackers? I got the bad part of this which is the fullness and nausea sad. It has seriously ruined my mood and daily life! I'm scared to go out and go anywhere as I'm scared I will actually throw up. I never have I always just feel nauseous but it scares me so much. I think I've developed really bad anxiety too because i just feel terrible and the more I think about it the worse I feel. I haven't officially been diagnosed with that but I truly think I have generalized anxiety disorder. That and maybe even be slightly depressed. Last year so many bad things happened to me I think it's affected me badly sad.

I feel sick all the time too and barely go out because I'm too uncomfortable and scared I'll vomit in public! Maybe try and see your doctor about anxiety? I've suffered since I was about 15 from it and there's a lot of anxiety around throwing up for most people as its not very nice obviously! However the gastritis can cause nausea as I know other people get it as well

Forgot to mention I have hyperthyroidism and that also causes nausea and a bunch of other problems -_-. I'm waiting to see a specialist at the end of this month and I'm praying to god once that is taken care of perhaps it can contribute to me feeling better hopefully. I heard that causes a ton of symptoms as well so maybe that's why I've been feeling lousy too.

Hi, first of all please forgive my english sice it is not my native language. I can not always follow this forum, actually answers did not solve myproblems totaly up to today (bcos some of them hard to practire) but I hope mine helps you..smile

deesan, I thought much on this eating issue, searched diets on internet and also diet from my doctor. According to irritale bowel snydrome diets, nearly everything is forbidden, and nearly all diet says eat 6 times a day with small portions,

How will I eat 6 times a day, just keep some meals and eat them later ? How will I keep ? I am an office worker, they are not fast food to keep, even they are if you keep, they will smell out. so, this idea can be skipped. I eat 3 times a day like everybody, thats it, I do not count small things during day like a piece of chocolate, biscuet, a furuit or cake.

you feel only nauseous ?,also bad smells from livers.. it realy realy sucks, also other people, I can not soclialize people much because of the that mostly.

Normaly I was drinking at least one coffee latte, and much tea, .

Here is the solution; forget decaf latte /coffee, no help bcos milk even increase diarrhea in stomach.

Drink only light tea in the mornings, that means very little density of black tea

aso try not to drink ready tea like lipton (I don know know which country/culture you belong, some countries do not have tea except ready lipton teas)

Try not to eat any pancek, chocolate except you are not invited into something,

otherwise it is not easy to tell people everytime why you are not eating something.

and the last and most important problem, decrese stress. but how ? yoga ? go hell.. lets get serious, do you remember when you get first this faulty behaviour ? try at least to decrease it, yeah life is pain but there is no reason to be measurable in in front of others, life sucks but be merciful to yourself and try not to decrease pain by not thinking serious things. Thats it, if you find some good ways for the problems, please also inform use. Have a nice day and life ..(if you can !)

l started with daily nausea from waking to bedtime last year, it is horrendous, movement made mine worse, from gettin dressed, trying to do household jobs, trying to do shopping an endurance of leaning on the trolley and home, sitting settled it a little, but how long can anyone sit for, l lost my appetite, just had tea and oat biscuits daily, a tiny meal of plain things some evening,l,d gone off instictively tinned food, ready meals, so just pots, veg, bit chicken or fish, pasta and rice ok, could eat fries if baked, also went off eggs, milk, used almond or soya, lactose free cheese, spring water only,  had tried chemist stuff no help, also scripted anti nausea, no help, l,d also get bloated with wind and belching at times,.  Finally after month had a scope with gastrologist, showed gastritus, l was given omprazole, after a couple of weeks it did settle 90percent, and got back appetite for eating more, though still try to keep to small portions of same type plain food, as l still feel it there a little and have had it aggrevated if l go back to past food types. l dont know really how much is settled due to omprazole or diet change, or lactose free. Another thing long before l started with the nausea, a year at least, l,d noticed l got a full uncomfortable feeling very easily after eating a very small amount of food, whatever type, l used to think it odd, but it was the nausea starting that became biggest problem, l dont doubt anxiety can cause or add to it, but also symptoms can cause anxiety.  l think thyroid problems can cause general poor healt which improve well when on right meds.  Hope you get help soon.

I just wanted to be sure, you both have problems with only nausea , or dierrha , constipation.

By the way,I also had medical diagnoses, endoscopy and colonosopy, many blood and other tests (urinet etc.) nothing ever found.Thats good actually, if something is found, it is worse.

My doctor gave me some pills for stomach movement, a small antidepresant, and diet and no stress. I dopped pills after a hile bcos they have no effect after some point if I do not diet. so, only possible solution is to do diet .. and only possible solution to remove it totally is do not eat anything (even this not helps totaly)

so just eat less, and do not consume foods and beverages that trigger your responsive stomach. I hope these advices will help both you and me smile

hi thanks for advice, mainly nausea and bloating wind for me, l do take a lot of care with what l eat now, and no lactose at all. You learn a bit more as yuo go along, l hope l never have nausea as bad again, its soul destroying and hope those with it find solution. best wishes.

Thank you for your response! Yeah nausea sucks because I still have to eat, also with that bloated full feeling I have. How long until your medication kicked in? I have been on it for three days today so probably not much for me. Perhaps in a week I'm hoping. It's very difficult for me to eat because I notice I get full so much easier than before ugh.

l,d been taking the omprazole two weeks, and thinking, oh hell this doesnt work either, then it suddenly did at two week mark, but not sure if your med is a ppi, lve never heard of one you mention,  pepsin,  sure some posters will know of it, doesnt sound like a ppi, most seem to end in zole, but it might be quicker acting than ppi,s, though ppi,s seem to be commonly prescribed, by gastrologists, so l hope pepsin works for you. The chemist name for simular to ppi,s is nexium. hope the pepsin works for you, theres a lot of info advice on gastritus thread, might be worth you asking anyone on thread  who,s used pepsin how affective it is, wouldnt like you do two weeks and find it isnt, sure some willl advice you

      Good luck

I actually had asked about omeprazole but they wanted to start me low and gave me Pepcid instead, it's also knows as famotidine? Perhaps you've heard of that one. It's not a ppi but a histamine H2 receptor that also helps heal the stomach lining and reduce stomach acid. It this doesn't work soon they said they would give me omeprazole. I'm praying it works though sad. Also, did you ever have any soy or almond milk? I know it's not good to have full fat milk so that's why I ask. What about for a warm drink, any tea perhaps? Any ideas on what to have for breakfast?

      l know what type of med your on now, l was diagnosed with acid reflux many years ago, though wasnt really aware of any symptoms, the few l experienced for a few months went when l,d my  gall bladder out, but was put on cimetidine, a histamine receptor, and it was ok and had no symptoms for many years, then the nausea came out of nowhere and they changed cimetidine for omporazole. It might be the histamine receptor works for you, l hope so, and you wont need to go on omp, which many are wary of, though many use with success, l hope to get to stage of not needing it. l do use either almond or soya, like the almond and think good for you, almonds are. l used to like cereal and cows milk, now dont touch it, but cant do without tea, l just have a cereal type oat bar, keeps me going, many use chamomile or some type of herbal;

Many on gastritus thread know a lot about diet and supplaments, l think Ines specialises in gastric probs, diet,  the weird and wonderful, cabbage juice etc, Hope it settles for you soon.

By the way when you ate a small meal, how long until you could eat again? Honestly I try having a banana with some grapes but it's so hard and I know I have to eat anyway becuase my body needs the food and the fullness feeling is the inflamed stomach lining am I right? Also, it's bad to go too long without food right?

In the months when my symptoms at worst l just  lived off tea and oat biscuit every 2=3hrs. on reasonable nights maybe a small meal of plain food, but didnt eat again till next day, though rarely  felt hungry,l did lose stone, the only posative, being overweight before, l,d go to bed at night and see the hanging skin, but it didnt do me any good having a diet like that for months, l knew it wouldnt be good for me and should have used some supplaments l guess. My nails broke below finger tips, skin bad, lacking vits, But when it settled my appetite slowly improved and most of weight went back on sadly. Try to have supplaments to replace what your not getting in food being missed, some are solluable if it helps.

hope your meds help soon, your appetite should come back

Well I've been feeling lousy lately. The feeling in my stomach is disgusting me and the nausea doesn't help. I've been trying to eat though because I know not eating will make it worse. Trying to have toast, tea and light soups. Even small bowls of rice. I'm a bit underweight so if I don't eat it will go even worse for me. Any recommendation for the nausea? This will eventually to go away right? Also, where is the gastritis thread you mentioned the other day, can you somehow link me please I will be forever grateful. Thank you.

Tea and toast will keep you going, l personally would have soup, but its also how you feel and it affects you. You really need a diagnoses to find out whats causing problems, you could try nexium for a week or so from chemist if present meds dont help, or go back to docs.  The gastritus thread comes under acid reflux and oesophagitus, should be under health info at top of page A.  Hope they can advice more, good luck

Don't drink tea it has caffeine in it and caffeine plays havoc On nausea and gastritis! Raw vegetables are the best for you obviously but they're not too filling, try and eat sensibly where you can avoiding sugars and processed stuff it's not going to do you any good (tried and tested by me it makes you worse) I went a week where I could only eat bread and biscuits and my stomach was awful for a while X

No tea? Then any idea on what to have for a warm drink in the morning? 🤔

I actually forgot to mention i also have esophagitis so maybe that has an effect on how I feel? I felt nauseous the whole day today. Very faintly but I know the nausea was present. I still managed to get some food in me though.

Chamomile tea is what's recommended for people with gastritis or acid reflux.. It's the only one that is gentle enough to not irritate your stomach.
