How to get back to normal 6weeks post op.

Posted , 7 users are following.

I went for my 6 week review and was told I'm out of hip precautions now and can get back to normal. I'm finding that the muscles that have not been used are very stiff and difficult to bend.

Any ideas for exercises to get moving again.

Walking is great now. Completely pain free.

    Hi Hippy28

Good to hear your restrictions have been lifted. Were you given a programme of exercises when you left hospital? Have you had any hydrotherapy or physiotherapy?

I was told to do the standing exercises and to continue the exercises I'd been doing. No extra physio our hydrotherapy. Was just told to go swimming (no breaststroke legs) and to keep stretching downwards.

      Hopefully it'll get better

Are you in the UK? It baffles me how different the post-operative care is in different parts of the country. YouTube has lots of ideas for exercise. If you google hip replacement exercises you'll find others to do at your stage of recovery. I just bought a secondhand bike/cross trainer for a few weeks time. Once I'm stronger I'll progress to using the gym. Hope these suggestions help. Oh, and walk walk walk 😉

Yes I'm in the south of England and have been very impressed with the care and follow up until now. At the review I expected to see the consultant but I saw a physio. She was very good and answered most of my questions. Just a bit lacking on this issue.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll certainly google some exercises.

And yes I'm doing lots of walking. It's so good to be pain free.

Walk more, walk a bit farther, do the exercises you were given. You are on the road to recovery.

Yes, I'm doing lots of walking and set goals each day to go a bit further. My main problem is things like getting dressed without using my 'grabber'. Getting there slowly but not able to get sock on without sock aid yet.

I bet in 2-3 more weeks you will not need a grabber.

    Hi there

Building up muscles through gym work - cross trainer. Leg extensions abductor equipment all helps plus I've paid fir hydrotherapy which is brilliant . If in UK this is not in the NHS but it should be. Building up your core is good . Pilates is good. Good luck !

You sound like you're doing well. Just keep on with the walking and exercises. I was back on my bike at about 7/8 weeks, and it was v comfortable. Swimming is good. ( I'm 7 months, but still have to grab my right foot with my left hand before I can get my sock on!) All the best.

The problem is not just that you have been cut, pushed, pulled and manhandled in the THR operation, but the months and years before of walking badly because of your previous condition.  It's going to take a long time to get back to full fitness.

I am now over a year post THR & a revision cry ... and still having mobility and sleeping issues.  I am going to try pilates as recommended by my physio this week to see if that will improve mobility and posture.
