How to Get Rid of Bladder Inflammation/Frequency after UTI

Hi,

I am seeing a urogynocologist next week, but I was hoping to get some suggestions from people who have the same issue. Since I am in perimenopause, I easily get UTIs. I use Dmannose to help prevent them but both of the last times I was infected and then cured by CIPRO my bladder was left in a frazzled state (frequency and pressure - but NO pain). The first time I was prescribed Vesicare but I ended up in hospital due to high heart rate and blood pressure. Just last week, I ended my second UTI with bladder irritation as well. This time I used Uristat and had the same result as I ended up in ER with same condition. Doctors think I can't handle any antichlorinic times of medicine.

So I am now looking for any advice to help with calming my bladder and frequency. I haven't been diagnosed with IC - as I have no pain and no issues outside of after I get a UTI.

I am currently trying Marshmellow Root capsules with some success, although it seems to be causing diurectic reaction which causes me to pee a lot and then my bladder does calm.

Has anyone been in the same situation as me? I am desperate to end this so I can leave the house and get back to handling my four kids without living on the toilet. Ironically, it seems to calm during the night time.

Thank you!

I'm assuming if Uristat causes you issues, AZO will as well (which is what I take as needed for UTI and IC issues). Have you tried following the IC diet? It might help during those times after an infection while your bladder is irritated. Best of luck!

      Hi Amanda,

Yes, unfortunately AZO is off limits for me as well. I am currently following the IC elimination diet and hoping that helps as well. Thank you for responding.

Some baking soda (1/2 tsp in a glass of water) can help reduce acidity in the bladder and might reduce urgency/frequency. Don't take this more than once or twice a day and avoid if you have an issue with salt. IDK if it would be appropriate for you (a ot of drug interactions, but ask the doctor about) but another option is hyophen.

Thank you Amanda. I am not sure how I would react to the hypophen - but I appreciate the idea. I will research it and bring it up to the urogyno next week. So far the marshmellow root capsules have cut some of the inflammation, but I am always looking for additional ways to bring down the frequency.

i also suffer from same as you but cannot take herbal supplements as on warfarin. i have been told to eat bland, which i do, ive also cut out dairy and wheat as much as possible. are there any things you can tell me help your diet as it can get quite boring drinking water all day and eating dry foods.

      Hi Ann,

I am so sorry you are dealing with this too. I have started with the IC elimination diet and will slowly try foods back once my bladder has stabilized some. For now, I am eating oatmeal, all kinds of potatoes, chick pea pasta, cheese and eggs. For veggies I use olive oil and add herbs such as basil or oregano. 😃. I miss my tomatoes, chocolate, wine and spices 😦.

i am glad to see you have started to try to stabilise this. i really dont want to have rigid cystoscopy followed by bladder infusions so will try to do this by diet like you. how was yours diagnosed? I am eating plain potatoes and rice cereal with plain crackers and consomme as i also, have ibs d after gallbladder op. i thinkmthe bile acid is not helping the bladder. are porage oats alright to eat? Any other ideas to calm it, its driving me mad. i have heard drinking bicarbonate of soda is helpful, do you know if this is so? Its so irritated its making me feel sick and the amount of loo wakings in night means i cant sleep well, are you the same

      Hi Ann,

My OBGYN felt that I have IC based on the bladder inflammation I get after UTIs. I am going to a urgogyn this week to get more information. Ironically, I also have IBS as well. I believe that is common to have both issues. All of mine started with perimenopause (I am 47). I easily get UTIs which leads to severe bladder pain and pressure and antibiotics make it initially worse. The UTI is treated but I am left with bladder burning and frequency. In the past, I tried Vesicare which reset my bladder but put me in the hospital with high blood pressure/heart rate. Uristat did the same thing. This is how I ended up on marshmellow root as I was desperate for something to help heal my bladder. Are you able to take a product like Vesicare? Have you tried Cystex? Or Uristat? My obgyn also gave me Uribel - but since it is similar to Uristat I haven't tried it yet. Really don't feel like going to hospital again. Can you take D-Mannose - I use it to prevent UTIs but it also helps soothe my bladder.

Have you tried probiotics for your IBS? I use Align and Refresh Pro B together and it has helped. My dinner last night consisted of mashed potatoes, peas, spinach (with olive oil), some bean pasta and carrots. I have lost ten pounds so far, but it wasn't the way I wanted it to happen 😃. I have tried baking soda, but it also hasn't helped my bladder at all. How did all of your bladder issues start?

      Have a good day.

I'm going through something very similar.

I am in 12 year remission from IC -the jury is still out on what's going on with me at this time.

I got a terrible uti in the beginning of January. It seemed to go away after some amoxicilian (sp?) but then something came back and has been shadowing me ever since.

Good day, bad day, etc etc

Problem is some burning and urge/frequency - but not all the time.

Like you I'm better at night but worse from when I get up or from about 10 AM -3 PM - weird

I"ve been to the urogyne PA and she said my old case of vaginal atrophy is back and that has pretty much the same symptoms as IC so I don't know for sure what I have.

I'm taking estriol cream for 10 nights just a smear in the vaginal area for the atrophy.

I've been following the IC diet pretty well although I sneak in a little glass of white wine every other night to keep my sanity. Always with baking soda (3/4 teaspoon) and 2 glasses of water.

Its like a rubiks cube - everyday a game to keep ahead of the bladder urgency.

No pelvic pain this time so its probably more the urogenital atrophy with bladder issues.

Thanks for sharing your story. It does sound a lot like mine. If you don't mind - how are you making out on the estriol cream? Is it the kind you get OTC or prescription? Any side effects? I have been offered estrogen cream but I have been investigating the OTC ones as well.

And yes - I hear you. I snuck a small bite of my homemade chocolate brownies that I made for the kids for Easter. I started with pressure and urgency. I told three doses of d-mannose and it seems to have knocked it down. I also feel like I am playing a game everyday to avoid a UTI and or bladder issues.

my symptoms have been put down to possible Ic but they abated and i havent had cystoscopy but six months on the bladder urgency is back, but it comes some days then goes, really hard to tell whats going on. i have had depression and anxiety over all this but cannot tolerate anti depressants. dr gave me diazepam and now i cant manage without it. i was 62 when this started and now 67. i think my hormones are playing a part in this but dr says no hrt at my age? Why not, i know many still using it at this age. im sure its causing the anxiety. is it right i am unable to have elp for hormones?

I got a prescription for Estradiol to take via applicator but it didn't do much and I wanted to go natural so I switched to vitamin e suppositories. They worked for a few weeks but I still wasn't getting better, so now I've gone to the estriol cream purchased over the counter from Amazon.

I'm on my 3rd night of that tonight - 7 more to go.

I was experimenting with CBD vaping and medical marijuana but that didn't work at all for me.

    Made urge frequency much worse.

As soon as I took it everything went south. I couldn't believe it as it was so $$ and I had such high hopes (!) for it. Now I've put it all away.

Please keep up updated on how the OTC estriol cream works out for you.....if you don't mind?

just thought i would pass along information i got today from the urogyno appt. she is leaning towards inflammation from constant UTIs causing frequency instead of IC issue. i have to have cytoscopy and bladder urodynamic study this Month. First she took a catheter catch of my urine and is sending it out for DNA testing to make sure i dont have any hidden bacteria. she said to continue with dmannose, rephresh pro b probiotic and she have me theracran sample to use for cranberry pill daily. she also gave me urine cup to place a sample at first sign of uti. then i take it to local lab. she also gave me macrobid to start at home at first sign of uti and to take after sex. once culture comes back she will let me know if i need to change antibiotics.

she gave me a script for pelvic floor therapy as she found many areas that could use help.

Will update later on. hope this info helps someone else.
