It needs to be treated with a high potency steroid ointment such as clobetasol or betamethasone, but it is a lifelong condition that requires at least monthly use of the steroid. I'm doing much better (diagnosed 2017) but I still need my steroid at least twice a week, and I have to periodically treat for yeast infections since the steroid encourages yeast growth.

Karla, Seginns has spoken the gist of it.

It will not get better on it's own. It must be treated with either a steroid or an immunosuppressant (or both). The steroid must be of a higher potency than what is generally available over the counter.

      1. Did your original doc diagnose via biopsy, or just visual. Biopsy is preferable.
      2. Did your original doc prescribe a steroid? If not, you need to see a different doc and get both a biopsy and a prescription for steroid.
      3. You will read about all sorts of dietary, supplement, and topicals. Many of these are helpful...none that I've ever heard of cure or do enough to protect you from cancer. Left untreated, LS results in a higher risk of cancer. None of us want to go there.

Meanwhile, frequent baths (soak at least 20 minutes), ice, aloe vera gel (pure, no alcohol), aquafor are the go-to's to calm it down.

HI Karla - Nancy here, I have taken the opposite view of either seginns or SnappyCat. It's been two years since i was diagnosed and i've never taken steroids. I have changed my diet and I have studied up on the what nutritional deficiencies I must have had that led to this condition. I am very comfortable now and never get yeast infections. I, like many here, had to go absolutely totally sugar free for some time, though now i can indulge occasionally. I've also eliminated dairy from my diet. For myself, I haven't noticed andy difference from eating wheat products, though i have reduced the amount of them as well. ( As you read up here you'll learn that everyone has slightly different responses - i.e. their bodies need different rebalancing chemistry. Some will swear they can't touch wheat without it causing a LS flare. So you'll want to eliminate the big three major offenders and figure out your particular needs.

I originally learned about vitamin D and magnesium and MSM and zinc from earlier women here over reading back about 7 or 8 years. I studied up and googled nutrition. My cardiologist who also studied nutrition for himself is adamant about the need for vitamin d supplements for everybody. He totally approved my protocol. You can find my whole list with medical studies validations on my profile page links are under the discussions tab.

For immediate topical relief, Karla, many of us have found that rotating through several of the emollients we find best for our particular chemistry will keep us comfortable. At this point in time, I use pure organic coconut oil, aloe vera with tumeric drops added, and liquid vitamin E. I've also used olive oil which some people love, but i find rather runny messy - grin - and one woman said she didn't like smelling like salad dressing! For barrier ointments to keep urine off of raw skin, baby diaper rash zinc ointment has the double benefit of zinc being a known skin healer.

When I was very tender down there, hydrogen peroxide wipes just patting the area, not wiping, is very helpful.

Actually, SnappyCat, I have found several science articles that indicate that Vitamin D has anti-cancer properties.

Feel better soon, Karla and let us know what works for you the best.

Hi Karla... did the doctor prescribe steroid cream/ointment? I've found that the Clobetasol has helped me a lot with the itching and uncomfortable flare. But I also moisturize the vulva/anal area as well. That has helped me tremendously with the "tight" feeling. I haven't had any tears since I started moisturizing after showers/baths. And I also soak in Borax baths.

Those three things have helped me a lot. I hope you find relief soon!
