Take a ppi drug..omeprazole or rabeprazole..start with 20mg..or either u may take zantac which is much more safer than ppi drug..i have been on ppi for months and want to get off it..i also have a hiatal hernia and a lax LES but after stopping medication for 3 days or more i get severe chest pains and then start taking it again..i hope they find a cure very soon...fundoplication has risks involved and i m looking for less invasive ways these days..i dont want ppis to ruin my organs in the coming years

Yes I hope that there is something to be done for hiatus hernia as although I do not really get any heartburn or indigestion. I hate having this annoying cough and shortness of breath if I don't take iron tablets which I found out by mistake

Hi I have been advised not to have surgery as it is not pleasant. I have to have medication as hiatus hernia can make you anaemic and if I do not take iron tablets my cough gets really bad, I have shortness of breath where I cannot walk more than 2 minutes without getting out of breath and I wet myself due to the coughing. I hope to have this sorted soon as I will take it further. I was ill for six months and I do not have a proper diagnosis yet. Unacceptable

You may be a little uncomfortable for a couple of week but not a lot of pain I had a great dr who only does this type of surgery you need a specialist that knows his work if you look for a specialist and not just a surgeon you will be fine you need to have a endoscopy first to see how big it is and not a sonogramĀ

I had hiatal hernia, it was bleeding, I was anemic (iron supplements suck), I had a horrible chronic cough.  The anemia and the violent coughing made me pass out a few times.  I had no choice but to have the surgery.  I had a nissen fundoplication with wrap.  The surgeon told me he had never seen one so big.  My whole stomach was in my chest and twisted, maybe 15 cm.  That was 2.5 years ago.  Now it has reoccurred, as of 6 months ago my last barrium swallow showed it at 6 cm.  My cough is coming back.  I still don't have reflux or bleeding yet, so that is good.  The surgery wasn't that bad, but I don't want to have to do it every 4 years.  For the first month I was on pain meds because they pump CO2 into your abdomen to make room for them to work, well, CO2 doesn't just leave your body, it seeps upwards through your shoulders.  That hurt for a little while.  But after that, it wasn't too bad.

Before the surgery my surgeon was the most confident jack hole in the world, he told me oh, I've seen this 1000 times, we'll fix it right up.  When I came back in 6 months ago, he had his tail between his legs looking at the floor, he said we might have to fix it again.  I'm looking for a new doctor.  I'm greatful that I'm not bleeding anymore, but who knows when that can start up again.

Has anyone tried the water drops?

I too have chronic coughing and don't know whether the cough is the result of the hernia or the other way around. finally I was diagnosed with borderline asthma and given an inhaler prescription which initially helped. I now have hoarseness and continued coughing spasms although I am taking a PPI drug. I have a large hiatal hernia and definitely don't want to get surgery.
