HRT and perimenopause

Hi all ..

Went to see doctor today as have a very late period- almost 5 weeks now. This is the latest it's been for me.

The doctor was very helpful and told me that all symptoms definitely point to perimenopause. Sent me to have some bloods done(awaiting results) and advised I start HRT. This shocked me as last year a different doctor advised not to go down HER root as am far too young for it. (I'm 42)

The doctor I spoke to today suggested I read up on HRT first and decide. I was told that at my age I am 50% more likely to develop brittle bones and osteoporosis later on as starting perimenopause quite early. This is why I have to seriously consider HRT. I've always preferred to use natural alternatives when possible and the thought of HRT scares me slightly. Should I be worried?

If the pro's outweigh the cons then I would seriously consider taking it.

Any advice woukd be greatly received

Thanks!

Hi Dora, I probably started peri some 10 years ago, I went through precocious puberty starting my periods at 8 years old. I have osteoporosis now and I have many other health issues that put me in a high risk group. When my hormones finally crashed last December I was suffering with so many symptoms and so severely that even though an at risk patient my dr did not hesitate to put me on hrt. It is a necessay evil to some of us as we wont be able to function anything like normally without it. I am dreading the day that the dr says I have to come off the hrt as although not all my symptoms have improved the longer I take it the better I get. So as for you, you are like me where the pros do outweigh the cons with the hrt. Any dr who prescribes it will monitor you with regular blood tests and any other tests they may deem necessary. Try it, you can always stop if it doesnt agree with you. Also get a good strong menopausal vitamin to assist the hrt. If you have anxiety issues diazepam seems to be helping an awful lot of ladies on these forums. Hope you get sorted soon. XXX

      Tina00239,

Would you mind sharing your symptoms and why you are in a high risk group for HRT? I have never felt like this in my life, physically and mentally. I have had loads of tests done ( except hormone, Dr wouldn't do that) and thank the good Lord they have come back good! I had a hysterectomy that left my ovaries almost 3 years ago and prior to that I had a blood clot so i cant take HRT, but some days I sure wish i could.

Hi Edell, ofcourse I'll share with you. I am high risk due to a stroke at 21 years old. I have had numerous TIA's since and I suffer with angina. I am also considered obese due to the ovary disease and the fat cells it produces together with its treatment steroids for 32 years. I have come off of Prednisolone and now have to take hydracortisone due to drug induced Addisons disease. Also I am adopted and no nothing about my biological family so could be at risk of breast cancer. My dr knows me well and saw how I was suffering every symptom of menopause you can think of but also the severity. I was housebound, couldnt talk to anyone on the fone except my dr. Had at least 2 ambulances out due to chest pains and panic attacks. My dr decided there was no alternative but to put me on hrt for a while then wean me off really slowly so the symptoms dont overwhelm me again. I am sure a good menopausal vitamin supplement would not harm you and vitamin B and evening primrose oil. I have diazepam for anxiety 2mg 3 times a day and extra when going into stressful situation like dentist. Sometimes the pros outweigh the cons as they do in my case. Hope this helps you in some way. Thank you for your reply Tina!

I've done some reading up on HRT at doctors advice and have decided against for the time being.

I'm going to try a calcium and vitamin d supplement first and see how I go.

I get achey and clicky joints now so need to start something soon.

Apparently my bloods have come back fine but have all the perimenopause symptoms. It's so annoying!

I hope you're well and thank you again for you advice xx

You are most welcome. I take high strenght D vits and calcium aswell as a menopause vitamin and vit B complex drink. I need these and the hrt and am still suffering. I dont know how bad things would be without the hrt but if and when your hormones crash you may need to think again about hrt. I hope things settle down for you soon XXX
