HRT - Began hrt a week ago and have very sore nipples and swollen tum - is it worth persevering?

Hi guys, I'm new here and wondering whether I'm not suited to hrt.

I am 58 and have been post menopausal for a few years. Decided on hrt last week to help with the hot flushes and sleepless nights but now not sure whether to continue as the side effects of hrt seem to be worse than my menopause side effects.

Any similar experiences?

Thanks in advance

Hi Caroline. I went on hrt @ 56 same as you post menopausal , sweats etc maybe give them a little time as side effects can be a put off, sometimes you have to try different ones ? Hope this helps !

      Thanks for the reply.

My doctor wouldn't prescribe hrt as I've been menopausal for some time so I just went to the chemist and started taking the same progesterone pill and oestrogen as friends - they can't believe the doc won't help.

I have actually reduced the oestrogen gel to half tonight to see if that helps... my breasts are so sore that I don't think I could put up with it indefinitely but want to at least give it a few weeks. Doesn't help that my tummy is very swollen and also giving me constipation 😔

Hi Caroline , i was started on hrt a little while b4  i was postmenopausal maybe this is why my Dr prescribed them ? I would give it a few weeks as 2 of my friends are on the gel & no side effects been using it for a while now, if not feeling any better after a few weeks maybe go back to see your Dr , keep in touch, smile

Hi Caroline. I gained 7lbs and my breasts were very tender when I started hrt 8 months ago. Patches. After a couple of months the breast tenderness stopped and I've lost a couple of pounds. It takes a while to settle. The sweats stopped within weeks. I feel so much better, skin, hair, nails noticeably better. Less fatigue and aches.

Magnesium helps to soften stools and aids sleep. I use chelated magnesium. Drink a cup of hot water first thing in the morning to get things moving.

Good luck, keep in touch x

Hi Caroline, you need to persevere for 3 months really on any new regime, give your body chance to adapt and get used to things.

Thanks for your replies, I really appreciate them.

I guess I'm nervous as my doctor refused hrt but I've been suffering flushes and insomnia for so long. I also recently lost Mum to breast cancer so realise I have a higher risk than most. But the changes to my skin have been terrible too so I decided I had to give it a try.

I reduced the gel to half dose last night and my abdomen is less swollen today (however that could be because I ate lots of fruit to help the constipation) so I'll continue like this for a few weeks and see what happens. Fingers crossed, thanks again.

Caroline, I'm just curious, but what changes were you also seeing to your skin?  Were you also having vaginal atrophy and dryness?

Thinner skin, deeper wrinkles but mainly caused by sun damage. No vaginal problems just horrendous sweats and insomnia... I'm a business language coach so not pleasant in a session ;(

    Hi Caroline,

What HRT are you taking?  Is it natural?

      Hi Janet,

Oestraclin gel which I reduced to 1.25 a couple of days ago and Progeffik 100g every other day vaginally.

Today I am exhausted, too tired to do anything! Not sure hrt is worth it for me after only 10 days sad

      Hi Caroline,

I know this is an old post, so hopefully everything is better now.  But I noticed that you said you lowered your estrogen, and I think the progesterone remained the same as when the estrogen was higher.

The E should be balanced with the P.  So if you kept the P the same, but lowered the E, they would be out of balance.  The progesterone would be too high for that lowered amount of estrogen.  If you lower one, then the other has to also be lowered.  Being exhausted, and too tired sounds like high P in relation to E.

    Hi Caroline,

I started natural hrt 2 weeks ago and I am just experiencing tender/sore nipples.  After reading some of these responses, I guess that's to be expected as many others are experiencing the same thing, but I will be bringing this up to my doctor when I see him next.  If it's caused by too much estrogen, I wouldn't think that would be a good thing.  Too much estrogen can cause breast cancer.  I am concerned that you are not under a doctor's care.  I went through blood work first to see where my hormone levels were.  I was told that I had the hormones of a woman in her 80's.  I am 61.  I was not surprised by hearing this, as I have had 14 years of menopause.  I just couldn't take the hot flashes anymore, so I dished out the money to see a medical doctor who is also a naturopathic doctor.  Once my test results came back, he prescribed a formulation that was designed just for me.  I was concerned about putting in hormones when my body had been dry for over 10 years, but he said that he would start me on a low dose.  When I picked up my prescription, the pharmacist did tell me that it was a low dose and quite common.  For being a low dose, I was surprised that I am experiencing this tenderness in my breasts, well mostly nipples.

I know you mentioned that you were wondering if you were suited for hrt therapy or not, but being that you don't have a doctor to bounce all of this off of, I think you probably are suited for it, because without hormones you'll have other issues.  I just think that this is important enough to be monitored by a doctor.  I know I finally made the move because I wanted to do it right.  Prior to going to him, I was using a cream that I bought at a health store, but it is not at all like the formulation that I needed and it really didn't do me much good.  With future blood tests, my doctor can monitor me and the dosage can be tailored to meet my needs.  I just feel safer being under the care of a professional.  Since your doctor didn't want to do it, maybe you need to find someone who does care.  Check out wellness clinics/doctors in your area.

I'm also new with all this.

(I'm 62 yrs old. Been menapausal for a few years)

Three weeks ago I started Biote Hormone Replacement Therapy (pellets inserted into fatty part of my buttox) plus nightly I take progesterone. I was having night sweats, day sweats, no energy, mood swings etc. A week later I became more alert, had energy, no sweats which I'm so happy about. Five days ago my breasts became so sore; feels like I had breast surgery. I'm hoping it will eventually go away. Going to call Dr. Tomorrow. Anyone else experiencing side effects like this? It's hell being a girl !!

Yes I had the breast tenderness after 2 or 3 weeks after starting hrt. It will ease in a week or two. Try to lose a pound or two, that helps. The benefits definitely outweigh the discomfort.

Ladies, if nothing else it's good to see other women who are trying HRT after menopause.  I just turned 61, and have been attempting it also.  I started because I really didn't want the vaginal atrophy and dryness that started about 4 years after my periods stopped.  WOW, this menopause stuff stinks.

It does take time for your body to adjust to having some estrogen again.  Wish this were easy.

As I said before, the sweats, the energy and the mood swings are so much better. But the "libido" is not there yet.

I'm just wondering if I'll ever get that back. Well, 3 out of 4 ain't bad.LOL

      pamella19,

Does your pellets contain testosterone? If you are looking to get your libido up testosterone can be very helpful. I am on bio identical transdermal creams that include testosterone and have had to boost my testosterone cream up twice since starting two years ago. It has made a big difference. Good luck.

I guess it took time for the pellets and the progesterone to take effect. My libido is back. yippie. No more vaginal dryness.

Next week I have my second round of pellets. Which I am looking forward to. My husband can tell you I'm a totally different person in all aspects now. No more night sweats, no more depression. No more irritability. So every three months I will be getting these pellets inserted which cost approximately $350 each time, which is a small price compared to what I have been going through the last few years.

      pamella19,

Isnt' that wonderful! Yes, we don't have to be miserable during this part of our life! Can't stress enough, with a doctor that knows what they are doing, takes proper labs, doesn't over do the hormones and moniters regularly, you can be free of the agony. Also, as you state, $350 is a small price but unfortunately many people are accustomed to the insurance paying and they have a hard time paying for these fixes. So happy you are doing well. I've been on bio identicals for over two years, haven't had any problems.
