HRT cessation cold turkey for surgery..

I am going to have a knee replacement in a few weeks  I am 78 years old

and have been taking premarin since I was 50.

It was the pre-op nurse who told me to come off HRT, and not a doctor, so I am concerned, because I have always understood that you should withdraw from HRT gradually.  I stopped taking HRT two days ago, and frankly I'm worried, how am I going to be.  The nurse told me I can resume taking HRT after surgery.

Hello Masvis,  I'm 61, and been taking Premarin since I was 33. I have had several major surgeries, and no one has ever told me to go off of my Premarin.  The only thing was aspirin, and any blood thinners, Vit. C, Fish Oil, and maybe certain meds, but never my HRT.  And, yes...we are to come off of them slowly, when we do decide to come off of them.  I would call your GYN before stopping completely.  That just does not sound right.  Good luck.  Let us know what they say, as that would be good info for the rest of us women on HRT.

My advice is keep taking the tablets - I am the same age as yourself and would give anything to be able to resume taking HRT - my GP will not prescribe because of my age.  I have not been well since coming off Premique.  I just wish doctors would listen to us.

Roberta, if I were you, I'd change GPs or go to a GYN, and get back on them.  There are ladies in their 80's still taking them!  I plan on taking them till my last day!  I think some of our GPs don't have a clue!  There is no reason we should have to suffer!  Unless...of course there are health issues to prevent it.
