HS

I have suffered from HS for many years but am now worried.  I understand it is an autoimmune disease and my question is if you have this it is more likely you will get other autoimmune diseases too?

Does anyone know please?  x

    Hi Hypercat

Good question and one I've wondered about myself.

My dentist advised me that there were white patches inside my mouth, I had these checked at a hospital by an oral specialist and I was diagnosed with a completely harmless condition called "lichen planus" which is also an auto immune defficiency.

So my personal view is that there may well be a link, on the other hand though I have a tremendous ability to not catch colds or any other nasties that family and friends all suffer with so my auto immune system seems to be well above average in other areas.

I've read an awful lot on HS including a lot of personal experiences and not once has anyone ever mentioned having another health affecting auto immune condition.

I can't give you an exact answer but I really don't think you should worry, we have enough to deal with unfortunately with HS !

    Take care.

    Hi Hypercat,

I have suffered with HS for over 30 years, i also have crohns which is an autoimmune disease,( i have had it as long as HS) and now possibly rheumatoid arthritis ,( again autoimmune) i do think there could be a link, but the same as Dave, i am less likely to suffer the normal colds and flu that most others get frequently. I don't think you should worry though, you have enough to deal with!

I have discussed with my GP the possibility of a link, but he is reluctant to give a definite answer, mainly because i don't think he knows.

Thanks folks you have set my mind at rest quite a bit there.   To be honest my HS seems a lot better nowadays than it has been for years and I put this down a lot to being retired now.  I found stress was a big trigger for mine.  Or maybe it is my age?  Who knows - I am just grateful for it.  smile  x
