HS is a really bad disease to have

Hi
I have had this condition for quite some time now and the really horrible thing about it is that my armpits are not clearing up, even though I have been on anitibiotics the whole time. It is just wet underneath each one and giving off an odour that isn't nice. Does anyone else have the same thing. I will probably be referred to a dermatologist/skin specialist soon, do you they would be able to do anything, I'm not working at the moment, it's impossible to work.

Hi Phillipa,
I had the armpits for years. (I'm 40) One thing I noticed, polyester made it worse.
I went to the dermatologist who went through more antibiotics then gave me double doses of accutane for months or until I was sick of the side affects (dry skin). It cleared up other acne but didn't get anywhere on the armpits. It works for some apparently.
I had surgery for similar problems and ended up having intravenous antibiotics for 10 days which inadvertently cleared the armpits.
When I came out I found each time I ate hot or cold potato chips it started flaring again. Since then I've avoided potato like the plague and nightshades altogether.
I had previously excluded all sorts of bad things from my diet but since potato was a vegetable I was eating it all the time and the inflammation seems to last a couple of weeks, so I was never clear of it.
I continue to wash the area with chlorhexidine and if anything ever weeps (after eating something) I make sure to cover it and use iodine. I think the original problem can turn into a secondary infection so would definitely recommend treating it as a wound and caring for it to reduce the bioload. Treat it as transferrable.. Don't re-use towels without washing etc

I've had multiple surgeries in all areas, both armpits, buttocks, groin, and inner thighs. This is a very disabling disease and i feel your pain. Antibiotics can only due so much. Depending on how bad your symptoms are it would help to see a dermatologist and quite frankly you may need to consult with a surgeon especially if the pain and odor is severe. Stay positive and God speed

Thanks for your reply, yes they are very painful, but at least I know that when I see the dermatologist, I know there won't be a magic cure.
Do you find it possible to go to work with this condition?

Extremely hard to work, especially with the pain and odor it can admit. That's why it's one of the skin diseases that socia l security recognizes, not every body goes that route but to each his or her own way. The main thing is that quality of life

I am not sure what route I will take yet, but I need to know and consider all the options.
