HSV-1, Possibly now HSV-2

I have had cold sores all of my life, I am now 22 years old. A few months ago I was recovering from a cold sore, and slept with someone new (also performed oral sex on him) 2 days later, my lips began itching and I experienced the worst cold sore outbreak of my whole life. I had multiple sores on my lip, and probably 10 more over my cheeks, under my nose, and even on my chin. I went to the dermatologist and he prescribed me Valtrax, a steroid, and an antibiotic ointment. A few days into taking my daily does of 1000 mg valtrax I noticed two sores on my inner thighs, but these never oozed or crusted, they looked almost like dark ingrown hair bumps. When I was at the Dr. he made the comment "have you kissed anyone new?" because he claimed sometimes different germs or viruses can "activate" one another. Is it possible that my partner could have had HSV-2 and I got it from him?
