HSV-1 Recurrence experiences

Posted , 3 users are following.

I was diagnosed with HSV-1 in April of 2019 which was devastating at the time but has not affected my life much since. However, for the first time since the initial, I am having my a recurrence of epic proportions, definitely comparable to my first OB if not a bit worse. I thought this was not expected? I feel lucky to have not had an outbreak in a long time but am disappointed at the severity. Has anyone else had this experience? Just would like some reassurance that this could be normal even though every website says recurrent outbreaks are not as bad. Thanks for any insight!

most outbreaks after your first are not as bad! but sometimes they can be.

what was happening around the time if your outbreak stress? sickness? trauma?

    do you take regular antivirals?

people say oh your lucky you have hsv1 its not as bad as hsv2. but really everyones experience is different.

    feel free to message me!

Thank you for the reply! Around the time of this outbreak I was stressed and had drunk sex same day of shaving, so could have caused some tears. What is interesting about this outbreak is that all of the sores are presenting as cuts, which is very different from my last one. I am not on regular antivirals because the doctor that diagnosed me said they are not needed with type 1, but am on them for this outbreak..only 3 days worth though is that normal? Hoping this is just an anomaly and future outbreaks won't be so bad. It also didn't help that I went in Friday with two cuts thinking it was a recurrence but wanted to be sure but the doctor assured me it was a shaving incident only for it to become full blown over the weekend...but oh well. Thanks again!

this could have possibly triggered it. hopefully if there is any more they will get better!

suppression is for both hsv1 and 2. it doesnt just help outbreaks but it helps with transmisson.

lysine helps 😃 and also tea tree oil with a little coconut oil dabbed on will help dry it up!

Going through the same thing, I have HSV2 though. My first initial outbreak was bad. Took 2 weeks and antivirals to completely go away and i couldnt even wear underwear or sleep on my stomach. That was May 2018 & since ive had maybe 2 that werent painful and went away within days but right now i have one sore right on the top of my vagina and its so painful. i started putting cortizone feminine itch cream on it and its really helped so much bc it has aloe in it as well. i started taking my antivirals but today will be my 3rd day and i dont feel like it helped much. Hopefully that helps you.

That sounds terrible! Antivirals have been helping but I only have two left so I am going to ask for more I think, I am not sure anybody abuses antivirals so hopefully they are not stingy. Maybe something you can ask for too? It does help to know that not everyone barely even notices a recurrence haha misery really does love company unfortunately.

i have a prescription on hand i just chose not to use them because i felt like it makes more sense to use for emergency with an outbreak than always have it in my system and not have anything to take with an outbreak. Hopefully it works out for you but i've learned that if you can get rid of the sore/cut then all the other symptoms subside. They have creams that have acyclovir in it maybe ask for that too?
