HSV-2 only: Who else, and how often do you have outbreaks?
Posted , 68 users are following.
Thought it would be good to have a discussion thread just for those with IgG/swab-confirmed HSV-2 (so not presumed cases).
For personal "research" purposes, lol, I'm also very interested to know:
1. How long you've had it.
2. How often do you have outbreaks.
3. Did you have a history of cold sores (even if only as a child) before you acquired HSV-2.
Other personal experiences regarding HSV-2 welcome. Cheers!

Hey everyone. I found this discussion via Google.
I'm a 19 year old girl who's currently in my first outbreak. I got diagnosed via the doctor looking however I'm waiting for my test to come back which type it is. I have quite a few spots and also ulsers around the vagina hole.. I'm on my 4th day and on my 2nd day of antivirals. I'm also on antibiotics as I had a urine infection when I went to the sexual health clinic. I'm just looking for some support really. I've researched that it can take nearly a month for these to go away.. somebody please tell me that isn't true? I can't cope with the constant itching and uncomfortable weeing and wiping.

Ive only had one inital outbreak, it was quite mild i think i didnt have any pain or itrching just 3 small blisters and some occasional burning when i passed urine.
Never had a cold sore.
With regards to medication Im in the UK and i dont even think you can get any perscribed. So im not taking anything for it.
Wishing that i dont have another outbreak at all not sure if thats possible?
I have days where i dont think about herpes at all and then ill have days where it plays on my mind every minute. depending on how bad my next outbreak is and how regular i get them i think i can live with having it, its just the dating and having to tell a partner i have it that stresses me out.
Also who the hell went and named this virus herpes... such a ugly word it doesnt help with the stigma at all!

Right! The name just sound all bad, but once you educate yourself on it like you said it'd not that bad, very manageable and not life threatening. When you hear that name you just think of the nastiest things. I didn't even know it was so many forms of herpes for example shingles surprised me.

Hi everyone,I tested hsv-2 positive hsv-1 negative by ELISA IGG (3.9) 4-5 months ago. IgM pos but I understand that's meaningless. I was expecting the opposite result and was shocked, since I had had typically herpetic oral sores on occasion, years prior, and only a handful of genital scrape or fissure like sores on occasion that were not typically herpetic sores and were negative by culture (3x) .
I had never had hsv serology as part of STI screening; in US it is not recommended unless you're having symptoms or are in a high risk population.
I'm pursuing confirmatory western blot (hopefully this week) given my index value . My BF at the time tested pos-1 neg-2 but do not know what test they used. He has history of oral sores.
Since he has type 1, I'm skeptical that this is an old type 2 infection. It could be new type 1 from oral sex from him (i understand Elisa sometimes misses type 1 and mid classifies type 2 in the range up to 3.5-ish.
It's been 16 weeks since last possible exposure to him (we broke up over this and another issue). So this week I plan to send specimen for western blot for a clearer read.
My ex-BF was incredibly ignorant about hsv, not believing type 1 could transfer through oral sex and that since 1 te activates frequently asymptomatically in the mouth, it is readily transmitted via giving oral, esp if receiver has no hsv1. He also didn't believe me that type 2 so rarely transfers to mouth that the risk is low for giving me oral, and he won't do that unprotected anymore. However if my type 2 is confirmed and I don't have type 1, then i likely have 2 orally and genitally, based on symptoms in both places.
Thinking back, the first tingling or feeling off "somethings off" came after oral and vag sex w BF who later told me he thought he had type 1 oral only. Maybe he really had type 2 and didn't know it.
I had nothing but a little oral and grnital tingling from that exposure, whatever it was. Fast fwd, I've had several classic oral sores once or twice a year, maybe more frequently but I'm pretty good at sucking Abreva on them early so they don't become big or last long. I hear that recurrent oral-2 is exceedingly rare, so this confuses me...why have my symptoms been mostly oral over the years of its type 2 in the mouth.
It took a while to be able to consider that vaginal symptoms could be herpes and I'm still not convinced, 3 neg cultures of atypical minor scrape type ulcers that respond real well to a little Rx antifungal/steroid cream. I rarely have pain, it can be a little sore, but it's not classic big lesions. They were more perinatal recently so gyno referred me to gi who ruled out crohns, colitis, internal fissures or fistula as alternative causes (all neg).
It was hard to find a doc to order the western blot, the gi doc really came through in helping me access that and it will be sent this week, if all goes as planned.
I've experienced the same research frenzy, depression and frustration as everyone else here. I felt better about myself once I understood this was not serious medically and is very manageable in the long run. But I have a lot of fear of rejection (starting with the guy I was seeing when diagnosed who walked without acknowledging he has an std, after I educated and sent him all the literature that he can give someone 1genital which could recur and he just refuses to think of his type 1 and my presumed type 2 similarly or equally in any way.

Hi I was just diagnosed with Hsv 1 & 2 friday. I'm not sure how long I have had it. When I was tested they took blood. I wish I could post a pic of the readings cause I'm not sure what I'm looking at. I do see IgG which is suppose to be the proper test but I also see IgM here as well. I believe I have had a outbreak a little over a month ago but I rubbed it off as having hair bumps cause I get waxed there were only two I tried to pop them looking for a hair. It hurt bad so left alone and it went away in couple days. No history of hsv. Just feeling really doomed right now.

Hey all,
It's been a 1.5 month since I've been diagnosed and everyday I just hope it was a misdiagnosed but my swab test came back positive. No blood work yet bc I've Neenah reading it's best to wait 3-4 months after the OB to do so.
My first OB wasn't that's bad but bad enough. It didn't last that long.
As far as the meds I was giving acyclovir but I guess I was starting the heeling process before I got the meds. I don't plan on taking them no more bc I didn't like how it made me feel I was sick and didn't have no appetite.
I've been reading up different herbals I can take.
Sex life is dead af of now. Lol.

My boyfirend just got tested and he told he has chlamydia so i went to go tested and they told me I don't have chlamydia but I have type 2 herpes. He was not aware when I told himso he went back to the clinic and they told him he has type 2 as well. Is this possible that I can get only one of his std's and not both? Is it normal that a clinica only tells you that u have one type of std and then wait till u come in and tell u that u have another std?

Depends what they tested you for. If only herpes, then they can only tell you your herpes results. In your bf's case, they only tested for chlamydia the first time. I guess it's possible to catch only one and not both. How soon after sex did you test for chlamydia?

9 days.... but he did not get a new test he said that they couldn't tell him over the phone he had the virus so he went in to go get his medicine for chlamydia that's when they told him.

Chlamydia can take up to 2-3 weeks to show up in tests, I believe, so you should retest. 9 days may have been too early. Don't know about your bf. Was he tested for both chlamydia and herpes at the same visit?

Then that is rather strange why he wasn't told at the same time, unless his herpes results took longer to come back, they forgot to tell him ... or he was withholding his herpes results from you. Could be any of the above!
