Hsv1 confusion

Hi all,

I had my first outbreak of genital herpes a year and a half ago but only recently learned I actually have hsv1. I’ve been with my boyfriend for almost 5 years which leads me to wonder why I didn’t get my first outbreak sooner? He’s never had cold sores ever but I know he can still shed the virus. My confusion is:

1) why didn’t I get cold sores? I was kissing him long before I had oral sex with him?

2) is it possible I got hsv1 from kissing someone before him and I just randomly got a genital outbreak rather than an oral one? (I had never done more than kissing before my boyfriend) Is it possible I didn’t even get it from my boyfriend?

Thanks in advance smile

It is possible you got it before you boyfriend. Your immune system may have had it dormant until idk maybe you might have changed eating habits or a lot of stress could’ve caused the std to come out if it’s sleep. But I feel as maybe you didn’t have any openings in the lips when kissing so when preforming oral with him all it needs to some Precum to come in contact with the skin and disrupt the balance of it.  My friend has hpv and has one out break and never had it again... she’s been living with it for almost 3 years now. It’s just all depending on your body

Thanks for that. I never considered that it sort of needs a “break” in the skin to get in.

I’ve actually been pretty unlucky and am on my 5th outbreak in 1.5 years 🙃

If you have hsv-1 genital, then you got it from either sex with someone that also has it genitally or from receiving oral from someone that has is orally.
