Hubby has had asthma and repeated chest infections since childhood and so had taken prednisolone over many years. A lot of the time given prednisolone instead of antibiotics

3 years ago (Feb 2003) was suffering hip and groin pain which GP put down to Sciatica so was treated as having it and had to endure torture with physio/traction over 8 month period.

8 months later X-ray finally taken and showed Avascular necrosis of both hips and femurs caused by Prednisolone

Orthopaedic surgeon wanted to perform ostotomy (hip resurfacing preserving op) to both hips and femurs.

PCT were not prepared to fund this treatment but following adverse publicity on BBC Watchdog agreed after all patients were reaaessed by Harley Street specialist

By this time was too far gone hip and femurs resembled Aero full of holes and fractures so total hip replacement was only option.

Operation scheduled march 2005 at local BUPA funded by PCT but cancelled due to chest infectiom.

Since then repeated chest infectons on Prednisolone continuosly 40mg daily.only recently down to 25mg

weight jan 2005 13 1/2 stone now 18+ stone has cushingoid features buffulo hump back of neck, swollen belly, oedema, hypertension worse and out of control, raised intraoccular pressure, treble and quad vision and eye pain, breathing difficulties worsened, persistant diarrhoes waiting for ivestigation by gastroenterologist, ?heart failure, hyperinflated lungs, admitted into hospital because oflow pottasium, pain and weakness in both arms possible Avascular necrosis but not been investigated.

Hubby has now been deemed unfit for surgery and has had to endure chronic pain for last 3 years present dose of morphine 300mg day but getting barely any relief from the pain.

finally refered to pain clinc 2 weeks ago

My opinion of prednisolone discuss the risks with your GP and only take them if life threatening illness

Finally hubby is not the only perso we know that was wrongly diagnosed sciatica. we personally know 3 other people locally who had same problem different GP but now resolved with hip replacement.

Hi i have avascular necrosis in both my hips have on pred since i was 13 and like your husband went through hell with doctors to find i had avascular necrosis as they kept say ing i was just trying to get attention from my mum and was making the pain and how i was walking up as my symptoms started when i was 15. By the time i was 19 they at last see something on a xray but my local aand e did not know what it was so sent me to a orthopetic surgeon who said it was avascular necrosis and that it was to far gone to do anything apart from replace them so sent me to guys hospital at london. I tried to cope with the pain as long as i could to put off having my hips replaced but by the time i was 21 i could not cope any more as no painkillers where helping so had my first hip replace at 24 after waiting for ages on the waiting list and my second when i was 27 after again waiting ages on waiting list. I really do feel for your husband as i know the pain is terrible at times i just wished i would die rather then keep coping with the pain. My second replace has not been a sucess as pred has weakened the muscles in my legs so letting the hip move in and out of place. Really hope your husband can find some sort of relif i'm thinking of you both best wishes dawn
