Humerus Fracture

My friend broke his humerus 3 weeks ago on a bike ride that we were on together and is still having a very hard time. I am posting this because treatment of humerus fractures seems to have changed since I fractured mine some 30 years ago. After my bones were realigned, I was put in a bulky plaster shoulder spica cast that encased my entire upper body to my waist and my arm to my fingers. I was in bad pain for a week but pretty much pain free after two weeks. I was also able to sleep pretty well and moved around ok without any fear of hurting myself. At 8 weeks, the cast came off and after 12 weeks I was pretty much back to normal. I wonder whether I was just lucky or whether the old school treatment may be better than what they are doing today.
