Husband with catheter urine flow question

My husband has had an indwelling catheter for around 15 months.

Before that he was using self catheterization.

But he had constant infection problems He had a holep operation about 2 years ago but that failed after a while and he was again unable to urinate by himself so was put on a foley catheter.

He is fully mobile and drinks plenty tea coffee etc but is finding he is hardly passing any urine during the day. He is filling a bag at night is this normal. He is a bit concerned. Is this normal?

Was it always like this? It depends how his kidneys are making urine. Perhaps, it is not making much during the day but tons at night. What is his urine volume in 24 hours? Is it close the amount of fluid he is taking in every day?

It's not unusual. Some of us pass most of our urine at night. I do. My urologist noted without comment.

15 months is a long time to be on a Foley. Why was he getting infections while using self catheterization ? Did he keep every thing clean ? Was he using one time useable pre-lubed catheters or reusable catheters ? Did he have problems with bleeding from Catheterization ? You should try to find out why he had the infection problems and get him beck to self catheterization or find a surgery or procedure to cure his blockage problems.

Most people produce more urine at night, so that may not be unusual, it is called nocturia or Nocturnal Polyuria. It may happen more in people who have problems with the lower legs swelling in the daytime.

He was scrupulously clean and was using the one time catheters supplied. We can't understand the infection problem it just wouldn't clear. He had an operation to reduce the prostate and it worked for a few months then the bladder stopped working again.

He doesn't suffer with swollen legs at all.
