Husband with PMR and taking Pred lost weight but worried about fat stomach

Posted , 10 users are following.

Husband George was diagnosed with PMR last October and he started on 15 mgs Pred.

He has reduced the Pred down to 7.5 mgs now.

He has also managed to reduce his weight from 105 kilos down to 89 kilos. But he is worried as his stomach remains very large - perhaps even larger than before the PMR began.

Does this sound a familiar problem with Pred and PMR?

I think I have heard of this happening. It's because of redistribution of weight caused by the steroids and should gradually return to normal, especially if he is getting some exercise, like a regular daily walk. Good on him being able to lose some weight!

Pred has the effect of redistributing our weight around the body. It tends to creep up around our stomach area and also up to the back of our neck causing a buffalo hump. I have heard the nick name lemon man about people with PMR as we get the shape of a lemon with stick arms and legs. I think that na9y be a bit OTT but gives you the Idea!

The amount of weight he has lost will make his stomach appear larger than it was in comparison with the rest of his body. What fat he has retained will probably have accumulated around his gut - it is a characteristic of steroid-associated weight gain. Has he cut carbs in his weight loss approach? That may help a bit. Another aspect may be poor muscle tone - not helped by pred and PMR.

Yes, he has cut down on carbs a lot, and also just been eating less. The French GP told him he has diabetes, so this has been another prompt to do something about his weight..

      Thanks for all the replies.

I'm glad you asked this question. I was/am very over weight but managed to lose 55 lbs in the last year. But with all that weight loss my stomach size didn't seem to get smaller either. I still have a lot to lose and I hope I can.
