Hi hun, your sex life is far from over! 80% of the population has HSV, 80% just dont know it. Your best bet is to ask any future partner to get a full panel STD test and include an IGM and IGG type blood test. youd be surprised at how many have HSV.
It can also be transmitted to the genitals by someone who carried HSV orally, with or without symptoms.
It can be carried for years with 0 symptoms or so little that its brushed off (which is why only 20% of us know).
There are a few options to try and lower your chances of having frequent outbreaks.
Daily suppressive therapy (you take antivirals prescribed to you daily). This is a good option after youve had a few outbreaks close together (ive had 4 since May), or youre with a partner who is H negative as the antivirals reduce the frequency of asymptomatic shedding (which we do without knowing or having symptoms).
There are also a bunch of vitamins out there that can help, certain foods can trigger for some, so finding out your triggers.
Most of all, try to reduce as much stress as you can. take up stress reducing techniques or hobbies.
Ive had HSV2 genitally since May, and have the best sex life ive ever had!
Theres no way to know how often itll appear. some people have outbreaks often, others go months or years. It all depends on your body and how it reacts to the virus.
Usually the longer you have it, the less outbreaks you'll have.
HSV2 also tends to trigger more frequent outbreaks than genital HSV1, however, again, its not always the case and depends on the person.

Youre no where near alone, and i know how lost i was with my diagnosis! It feels like the end of the world, but its really just an inconvenience like a cold would be.
