Hydrocele return

Hi, I have had three hydrocele operations within 9 months and it has come back a forth time. Two weeks after my surgery in January I believe it is filling up again. Anyone else have this problem?

I had a double hydrocele. The right one is back to normal after 4/6 wks. The left one is bigger than before.

I never got to 15 weeks before I had to go back, the operations are no problem its just I keep wondering if it will ever work, the more it has to be done the more scar tissue and that means the bigger that side of my scrotum.

Keith65805...just reading your story, all I can say is wow! I have not had your problem, but had hydrocele surgery back in July.  Here I am just waiting for my scrotum to go back to normal size, and here you are about to have a 4th surgery. That's unbelievable! Did your scrotum return to normal size after your first surgery, and the fluid/swelling began again all 4 times?  Another guy named patsfan7 is going through something similar.

Hi on all occasions it was just a little bigger than normal after the operation, it looked messy but I could feel my testicle, something that I had not done for a while. After two weeks I knew where my testicle was but could not feel it, the fluid had started to build up surrounding my testicle and it got bigger from there. Within 4 weeks it was the size of a Mango. This has happened after two operations, will know if this latest one has failed soon, so far it feels 50-50

Good luck with your results. Hopefully my scrotum goes back to normal size sometime soon. Mine didn't grow to mango-size as yours did, but it was huge...I actually had a quart of fluid in mine. My doctor said I had the biggest hydrocele he has worked on.

Is there actual fluid or does it feel like your testicle is bigger?I had my first one on in August of 2014, second in December and gave up for about a year and a half before I opted from a 3rd this last December. The doc did an ultrasound beforehand and confirmed fluid had returned but when he opened me up he said he found no fluid just a really large testicle. Couldn't tell me how my testicle increased or how he saw fluid when there was none either.

Hi, after the first general  anesthetic operation within 2 weeks I could feel it getting bigger, by time my appointment with the specialist came which was only 3 weeks it was the size of a large orange, was sent straight down for an ultrasound which confirmed it was filling up again. This was repeated after the second operation. By time the third operation came it was the size of a mango. Now two weeks after my third general I dont know what to think, My testicle feels surrounded by something that is hard, it could be that my testicle is swollen and it is not filling up again, its reacting completely different fron the other two ops so perhaps it is working.I have not got to go back to see the consultant unless there is a problem but he will call me in 6 weeks to find out how it is, by thn I should know if it is just swollen or it is filling up. Looking at the forum it does seem to take a while to get back to normal but this was never explained to me, the only thing that was said was how the op was going to be performed and there was

a 3% chance of it coming back. Prior to the hydrocele I had a hernia repair and that left me swollen, it never went down but got bigger from there. Until I had the hernia I did not have a hydrocele problem

From what I have read a hernia can cause a hydrocele so that's probably what happened in your case. In my 37 years I had never heard of a hydrocele so while I was relieved after the initial ultrasound that it wasn't something like cancer I was still kind of in the dark about what a hydrocele was. My urologist said it was a simple surgery and everything would be back to normal after the surgery and chances were slim it would reoccur. Well almost 3 years later and 3 surgeries later it is not, I no longer have the hydrocele but my testicle is still swollen to the size of a large egg or golf ball. It does take time for the swelling to go down I have read it can take up to a year if you have a hematoma but in general they say 3-6 months and the testicle may remain a bit larger from scar tissue but nothing significant like in my case. I have more questions than answers at this point not sure if I should even bother getting a 3rd opinion(I did go fpt 2nd opinion after 2nd surgery but he blew myconcerns off and said I would have to live with it) as off right now like I said it's large egg sized and feels really firm and my last procedure was done on 12/1/16.

I read also that a hernia can cause a hydrocele. That's what happened to me when I was younger. And that hernia left me without a right testicle, and here years later comes the hydrocele, which I had never heard of either until I was diagnosed with one. So you're still in limbo regarding why you still have swelling, but no hydrocele?

Yup, doc flat out said he had no idea why it's still swollen and couldn't think of a reason why it would be. He also couldn't tell me why it got even bigger after the 3rd(non) procedure if he in fact didn't do the hydrocelctomy. It feels really firm now there is no give if I try to squeeze it between my fingers. He blew off my concerns about my test levels being effected as well and I'm to broke to have anymore tests done. I had them upgrade the size of the testicular implant on my right side to try to even things off but because the left one got vendors bigger it makes no difference either way and is MUCH harder than the one I got put in 27 years ago and I'm not to happy about it at all.

That's so unreal that he can't explain your situation. And it's really a shame that you're living with the unknown regarding that. As for the testicular implant, I was never given that option when I was younger. After that hernia, I would have definitely went for the testicle implant.   if they had given me that option. Is the upgraded implant uncomfortable at all? Or is it just the fact that it's clashing with the swollen one?

It isnt uncomfortable or hurt in any way but also doesn't feel even remotely real it's very very hard. It also "sits" very high in the scrotum and doesn't hang like the real one. He said he sized it to match the other testicle but like I said the testicle got bigger somehow after the 3rd procedure so it's only about half the size of the real one now. Initially before the hydrocele you could barely tell it was an implant as the size was only off a bit. it was made of silicone though not saline like the new one and felt a little more natural even though I was told the new one would feel more natural than the original.

When they did the ultrasound after the first failure I asked them to check my hernia repair and they said it was fine, but I think it was the start of my problem. I just hope that it works this time, has been 2 weeks and it has not got any bigger, its just hard but that seems to be the norm. Unlike a lot of people saying that theirs was the size of an egg mine has never been that small, it gets so large that I have to support it whils in bed and that is with wearing tight fitting briefs as well. If it stays the size it is now I will live with that, its managable.

Thought I was bad enough, had it emptied twice with my doctor and both attemps failed, I plumped for surgery and it only seems to have been a succes after the third opoeration which was a month ago. Testicle is still a bit swollen but like you I knew when it was filling up but this time am still keeping my fingers crossed. Before the third operation the surgeon said it could still come back, so far though it still looks good. Seems like this is the norm for some people. Good luck on the forth op, hope all goes well.

No 4th operation for me the doc said there isnt anything that can be done at this point as there is no fluid. I'm going to go gwet a 3rd opinion and see if another doc can figure it out.

Good luck with that, I know how you feel.
