Hydrocele Surgery

Hello,
I had my hydrocele surgery on February 15th, 2013 in Houston, Texas. I wanted to share my story as I was terrified before having the surgery from all the posts I read.
Mine was on my left side and was about the size of a small grapefruit. I was living with this hydrocele for about a year, but going to the gym started to get quite uncomfortable. I started to show a bulge even in my dress cloths for work. It was quite embarrassing and all I could think about was people staring at me and mumbling "whats wrong with this guy." I am married with my first child on the way so I wasn't to worried about what some single guys worry about.
The day of the surgery I was pretty terrified, I work in Healthcare so being on the other side of the privacy curtain was pretty dramatic for me. I wasn't as much scared about the surgery as I was being put to sleep. I am 27 years old, live in Texas with my pregnant wife. My entire family all reside in Indiana, as we moved down to Houston 3 years ago. I kept thinking "What if I don't wake up?", "Ill never meet my kid", "I wont get a chance to say goodbye to my family.".... I questioned the anesthesiologist for about 5 straight minutes on what I could expect. They put in an IV and started pumping me full of water to hydrate me. This did calm me down a bit, then they gave me some valium. I highly recommend this before getting put out for anyone, this really calms you down. They rolled me into the surgery part, put a gas mask on me and I was out.
The surgery took about 30 minutes and I woke up about 30 minutes after that. Obviously when you come out of being put to sleep you are very groggy and confused. I couldn't feel any pain. I got dressed and the nurse rolled me to my wifes car and we went home.
I had about 10 stitches (dissolving ones) and a drain tube inserted to help reduce swelling. The first day wasn't bad as everything was numb. When I woke up the second day I had a migraine from hell. Probably from all the drugs the day before. It was hard to walk, but I didn't have any problems peeing.
The third day the pain started to come, honestly the stitches never hurt from beginning to where I am now. The pain I had was from the drain tube. Do not be alarmed when you have a lot of blood from the drain tube for the first 3-4 days, its normal. My surgery was on Friday and the drain tube was removed on Monday.
Swelling. Lots of swelling, expect this. Swelling will most likely be bigger than what the hydrocele was before it was removed. Looked like I was carrying around a softball in my pants. It has been three weeks and the stitches are gone and the drain tube hole is closing. I still have some pain from where the drain tube was, but not to bad. I am walking fine and going back to the gym tomorrow. Swelling has gone down, but still noticable. Feels like a hard rock sitting on top of my testicle. You have to remember, the testicles and sac are very vascular. Lots of tissue and what not so you will have swelling and bruising.
The swelling is smaller now than the original hydrocele and it can take a few months to fully go away. They say people can live with a hydrocele with no long term effects other than it getting bigger, but honestly, why would you want to do this? It's not normal, so why risk anything by just accepting that it is there. Get the surgery done and move on. You will be laid out for about 4 days. I was back to work on Tuesday (Surgery on Friday). Let me know if you have any other questions, don't read into all the horror stories. Everybody's body is different and if you have a solid doctor, they will take care of you.
I was asked about costs. I am on a high deductible plan with my wife to keep our monthly premium low as we are pretty healthy people. The doctor fee was $350. The surgery center is where it gets you. For everything it was $4,900. So in total for me out of pocket was $5,200. Fortuantely I have a HSA account and had the finances in that which are all tax deductible. Just depends on the type of insurance you have. My deductible is now met, so with the little one being born all doctors visits will be paid 100% in full for the rest of the year.
Also- Find a good doctor. It's your body, so always get a second opinion. Make sure you are comfortable with the Urologist
Good luck
Matt

My experience with the hydrocele was somewhat differentI . I reported it within a few weeks to my urologist I'm 95 years old and she decided to remove the Hydraocele although I did my research and realized that there was no cancer and so it was not necessary to remove my tesicle, however in the operation she decided to remove my left testis however she did so and then within a week or two the right side developed a hydrcele and then she remove that and as a result I've got to take testosterone shots. HER reasoning was that the stuff in the testis didn't look too good but wasn't cancerous and I was 95 years old and have 48 grandchildren so it was no problem not to remove it I disagreed then and disagree now and have had some indications because of my extremely low testosterone level with night sweats but in other ways have tolerated the situation and one thing about it they're watching no pain in or out however when I visited my urologist in Los Angeles that took care of me for 28 years and kept me free of infection or anything was horrified that she removed my testicles I would love some Divergent opinions

I'm at a loss to why she would remove not 1 but both testicles. A hydrocele is just a buildup of fluid it's not dangerous. She should have at least given you the option before she went and did it regardless of your age or what she thought about your situation.

You're right Pats fan I should have impressed her with my knowledge of the situation as I have done with numerous doctors over the years with great results and dictate it exactly what I expected her to do in that operating room but number one she's pretty number 2 a truly. lovely person and i evidently gave you the impression how to commence the surgery was really up to her however I'm doing fine I'm no longer having hot flashes and hopefully with the testosterone shots I'll be able to weather whatever was coming down the pike for me for the next so many years since I'm pretty much doing what I've been doing most of my life just at a slow pace and I don't see the number when I transpire mark on my forehead or anywhere else it is something that I would caution anyone that's contemplating a hydrocele situation aspiration is the easy way to go

Mine was caused by impact injury 5 years prior, the swelling came and went during that time in between, just as most articles describe. However, on February of 2018 I developed severe pain and swelling that required me to visit the emergency room. Fortunately I was able to see a eurologist , who was able to aspirate that day. It was an immediate relief, but, as the doctor explained, only a temporary measure, and that I should consider having the hydrocele removed surgically. For me, it was an easy decision, he explained the procedure, the healing time and the wait time to get in for the procedure. I signed up for the 6 month waiting list and requested to be put on their cancellation list. And the waiting game began.
After the aspiration the swelling returned 3 weeks later, but fortunately not to the emergency room pain level, but still very irritating. Roll ahead a couple of months and I get call that there is and opening May 10, by this time, the stress of worrying about that severe pain retuning was enough to jump at the opportunity. I had done a bit of research on what to expect, and had read about other people’s experiences with the same procedure, I found it very helpful.
Surgery day:
Checked in 11:00 am, hooked up to introvenous 11:30 then given a couple of Valium. 1.5 hours later the anesthesiologist and surgeon came in to brief me about the procedure. Basically, you get put to sleep and when you wake up, you will have had the hydrocele removed via a 2” incision. My experience, it really wasn’t that bad, when I came to, there was a lot of swelling and a fresh wound to take of. ( no drain tube) they kept me there for a couple of hours , called my wife to pick me up and I was outta there by 6:00 pm.
It’s now been two weeks since the surgery and the swelling is mostly gone ( I recommend having frozen vegetables for icing down the swelling) I was actually back to work 5 days after surgery ( I’m a Carpenter) but only did light duty work. Nothing over ten pounds for first two weeks. The incision hasn’t totally healed yet, but I’ve kept it clean and haven’t suffered any infections. I can also recommend talking to pharmacy and buying their behind the counter large adhesive cotton bandages 3.6”x4”.
In summary,
The only reason I waited 5 years was because the hydrocele inflamed and receded, so I lived with it never seeing a doctor about it. My suggestion is that if your in the the same situation, just go to the doctor and get the help needed. Hope this helped you.

Week 3 today. I am the same way. It is slowly settling. Took the jock strap off last week to try it out, was a bad idea. Doc recommends keeping it on for three weeks. I believe once the stitches on the inside desolve everything will be fine. Right now I can actually feel a stitch, but it’s not painful, just annoying. Strength is coming back and mobility is much better. 👍🏼

Hi all, Really glad I found this post here.
I am a 25 year old living in Ireland and due to our health care system being in absolute shambles and me being a public patient, I have been waiting over a year and a half at this rate to get my surgery done. At the moment my swelling is about the size of a 330ml Can of coke cola. It's affected my confidence and my lifestyle in general massively the last couple of months. I find it uncomfortable to sleep, walk up or down stairs, sit down or bend down on my knees as it is constantly in the way.
I just have two questions that are on my mind.
1)
Had anyone ever had serious pain with their hydrocele? I had to go down to A&E (emergency dept) a couple of weeks back due to the pain being so bad but all they did was took another ultrasound and did blood works and sent me home.(told nothing they could do that day) The pain eventually subsided over a couple of days but it still twinges every now and again. I am thinking about going down to A&E again and standing my ground till they do something about it again but im pretty sure I almost be sent home again.2)
Also I am curious to know if anyone had any difficulty with maintaining an erection or engaging in sexual activities here? Due to my swelling the top of it comes in-line with my penis and it is in the way whenever I do anything.
Failing going to A&E again I am hoping that I'll be able to get the surgery done before the end of the year, but alas as the whole Irish health system is falling apart at the seams I remain skeptical.
Thanks in advance guys for any information I really appreciate it.

i was in same situation last year. i went to emergency cause i couldn't walk with the pain being so severe. the on duty doc made a phone call to the specialist and got me in that day , had to be drained . i eventually had the operation to remove the hydrocele and have had no issues since. stand your ground.
