Hydrocele surgery gave me erectile dysfunction. Am I the only one?

So, I had a hydrocelectomy operation around July 2018. About a month after my operation, around the time the swelling began to go down (and notably, around the time I began having sex again and masturbating), I began noticing that my penis would not get as firm as it once did. I also noticed that when I ejaculate it no longer shoots out, it dribbles. This has been extremely unsatisfying and my condition has gotten much worse. I can sometimes maintain an erection but it is a challenge now and I literally have not had a morning erection since about a month after the operation. My urologists told me it has absolutely nothing to do with the operation which I absolutely refuse to believe. So I have hit a dead end in terms of getting professional help now.

I would like to ask you all, has anyone experienced this and gotten a different response from their urologist? i.e it is possible that the operation can cause this. I myself can feel a thick, swollen tube like structure inside my scrotum that runs from the root of my penis to my balls and I'm sure I could never feel it before the operation. My urologists gave me an examination and told me it's all good and the tubes were not even touched during the operation. Am I wrong for thinking that is utter BS because y'know, balls are attached to a few tubes, move the balls and remove it's surrounding membrane, there is a chance it could affect connecting features, no? Urologist says zero chance.

A couple more questions.

Where exactly was your incision made? Mine was directly down the center line of the scrotum about halfway down.

Has anyone else here got cysts on their operated testicle? I have 3 or 4 including one on my epidymis. I also was diagnosed with epididymo-orchitis prior to surgery with no actual conclusion as to why, or how to make it better.

Please can people comment who have experienced this or something similar post hydrocele surgery. I would seriously appreciate anyone who has any insight that could save me! I am 25 and I fully regret this operation.

    Hi Jim

Sorry to here your issue and at 25 I here your concern. I have had two ops because the first one failed and neither affected my erection. I am 60 & I would say mine is 7/10.

You will find as you age sperm won't fly out like at 16.

Have you considered trying viagra to see if that improves the erection? So you are able to function and satisfy your partner.

I would seek a second opinion to see what another urologist says about your problem being fixed and if the operation could have caused it.

I am sorry but I have dealt with medical people quite a few times and they lie. Don't think, "he's a doctor, he won't lie".

If the operation caused erectile disfunction, you expect him to say, "opps, sorry, my fault"?

Hope you get better, good luck.

I had surgery for a hydrocele exactly one month ago today. The swelling has since subsided and the pain from the surgery has pretty much gone away. However, ever since the surgery I have had complete erectile dysfunction. I first noticed the problem after two weeks, when I tried masturbate and realized that I was unable to become hard, at all. This was extremely disconcerting since I've never had this problem before. I thought/hoped the problem would take care of itself, but now it's been one month from the surgery and there's no change in my condition. I contacted the doctor that performed the surgery and he said that the surgery was not in an area that could affect nerves or blood flow to the penis, and that it's not related to the surgery. I'm very worried about how this will play out. I'm 49.

A hydrocele is not a serious or life-threatening disease. So you don’t need to worry much and become restless. I have suffered from hydrocele two times and both the time I had to undergo surgical procedures to get rid of them.

After both my surgical procedures, I hadn’t faced such an issue of erectile dysfunction. However, if you have such a problem, you should consult your doctor and discuss the problem. If the doctor fails to do anything, contact an experienced urologist and discuss the same. I think this might be a side effect of your surgery that can be treated easily.

hey, thank you for the post.

    do you have any news?

i had two hydrocele surgeries (one was not successful). the first was when i was 12-13 and the last was when i was 28.

i started experiencing same symptoms as you desrcibed. i noticed that my erections were not as strong after the first surgery. i am still able to have intercourse with my wife, but i am not very responsive to my own stimulation (masturbation).

i have asked urologist whether it could be a result of surgery, but he said no.

i know it sucks, i wish i never had the first surgery.

    good luck

    Hello Jim!

I had two surgeries since the first one failed. i got massive bleeding after both surgeries and the recovery time was months. Now after the second surgery my right testicle is hard and stuck in my groin. It feels terrible down there and its been two months now after surgery.

I have not been close to get an erection and haven't ejaculated since before surgery. I'm very worried about this and wonder if I ever will be able to have sex again.

My penis has also shrunk quite noticeable, not sure if it is due to not having erections in over two months or if the blood flow to the penis been damaged due to the invasive procedure the surgery really is.

I think it was a big mistake doing these surgeries. Maybe it will get better but I can feel it won't be the same anymore.

I also suspect that the urologist who performed these surgeries did a bad job causing the massive bleedings and having a right nut that is hard and stuck up in my groin.

For those that think about having this surgery. Try get an experienced surgeon or don't do it if you can still function with the hydrocele.

I thought it would be a minor thing to do the surgery but it was far from it.

Maybe I was unlucky but after reading about other peoples experience I realize that this type of surgery is a lot more risky than the doctors say.

Lets pray we all can function and be healthy again. Time will tell!

hi Jim, I had a hydrocelectomy operation on April of 2019 on my left testicle which had swelled to the size of a navel orange. my affliction started close to 2 years before my surgery. I still don't know why I waited so long I guess I was tired of surgeries and thought that it was cancer and didn't want to go through the misery. having lost some loved ones from that disease . everything seemed to have gone well with surgery and recovery, but after about 6 months I started to notice a change in my libido and ability to maintain a good erection. I also was told that it was not physical but probably mental. I know that it was definitely not mental because my wife of 38 years at that time always had a very healthy sex life, I never and I mean never had a weak performance issue and always had a healthy desire. as the months rolled by my desire sex along with weaker erections have really changed for the worst that terrific time we always shared. thank God I have a wonderful understanding wife as we still have a good time just not explosive like we were. I have tried at length different medications that are out there for ED with modest results. I am now going to see a specialist who already took blood tests 3 days ago to find what my problem could be. you asked about the incision, I was cut horizontally Midway down from front of the separation line clear around to separation again .I mean he really opened me up. having seen a video of the procedure 6 months after surgery was really upsetting. So glad I didn't see it before surgery. couldn't view it all, really turned my stomach.

I am 3 months past my surgery today. Mine was nearly 25 oz. and the incision was on the right half of my scrotum. Prior to surgery I had complete ED, but was able to orgasm during masturbation. I had a "buried penis". Post surgery my buried penis has corrected and my ED has resolved 70% by my estimation. Because I have BPH swelling of the prostate and the corresponding urination issues my urologist has put me on Tadalafil (Cialis 5mg/1x. The Cialis has opened my urethra further and I am hoping to avoid any prostate surgeries. I am a type 2 diabetic. I am exploring the possibility that the remaining 30% ED may be caused by prescription meds. I must add that I'll be 70 years old in May, so there is a strong possibility that at least some of my remaining ED may be age and medicinally caused. There remains a slight swelling of my testicle which is expected to resolve in another 3 to 6 months. My urologist wants to wait another 3 months and then consider other medicines for resolving the rest of my ED. I am pleased with my results so far but continue to work on issues. Considering my health I'm in much better condition than I expected. I also have prostate cancer, and lymphoma, but both are stage one and require no treatment other than to observe.

I just had hydrocele surgery done about three weeks ago. I can no longer have my erection at all. I notice my penis has shrink and never come out - since the operation I only had small erection once and since then my penis has been buried/shrinked -

Please what can do have have my erection back. I am due to see my surgeon in April for follow check up to ensure all are okay.

My testicle was operated on the rigjt hand side above my sack and I do not really know if the surgery has caused this and I do not know how to rectify this now. I am just looking at my wife now with no ability to have sex anymore . I am just 57 years of age.
