Hydrotherapy

I have just received a letter from the physio department at the hospital, they have booked me in  for 6 sessions of hydrotherapy starting on the 28th August. That should be fun, I don't swim and I don't particularly like water especially if they make put my head under, that would finish me off altogether lol. Anyone else had this and does it help?

I also not a lover of water I am sure that they wouldn't make go under I think it is just exercises that they do in water

Go for it Gill, the feeling of weightlessness, the ability to do movements that would be a struggle on 'dry land', the extra oomph it puts into the recovery process and mobility.... All worth it!  No need to get head under water, no need to be a strong swimmer.  My hydrotherapy pool was so nice and warm and small, not proper pool size; and physio attention individual although there was 3 other people in my sessions. We would walk up and down at  beginning forwards and backwards and sideways. Then each person to a corner of pool for one on one with physio dependent on your needs.  I'm really glad you have this!

Gosh, you are lucky!  I Live in Norfolk and NO physio advised or given!  Just doing as much as I feel my body can cope with.  You will be fine and grab all help offered with both hands ( and feet)

My surgeon was Mr Ingham, also at The Spire.  My op was 26 June.  New hip fine but getting alot of muscle discomfort and my "old" hip which will also need replacing, is being very problematic!  Heigh ho!

Very close neighbours, Marilyn! No I did not work in Roys but would be really nice to meet for a chat.  Do you have any preference to a day - I am flexible and happy for an excuse to come to Cromer or Sheringham!

I think the reason there might be different attitudes the physio is because the physio you do after a THR is all stuff you do yourself. When I had my shoulder replaced the physio had to do quite a lot of manipulation of my shoulder and gave me some deep tissue massage. With the THR most of my physio, apart from the hydrotherapy, was purely talking about how I was getting on with the exercises on the sheet.  You are given instructions in a booklet and provided you are doing those you should be just fine.

I had hydrotherapy to strengthen muscles and oa got bad before op.

It was just very gentle water exercises at your own pace in warm water. I loved it . enjoy xxx

How come everyone seems to be getting physio. I'm now 12 weeks in and I have not had a sniff of a physiotheripist. I have done the hole thing by looking on the Internet to see what I should be doing.

Heather, I would contact your hospital as they should have referred you to some kind of physio. Is all this a kind of NHS postcode lottery???  I am enjoying 6 weeks of gym physio at my small local hospital (North Yorkshire), it's great!

Good luck with your search for what you should be offered.

Bit late now lol I'm 12 weeks in. The only thing I have trouble with is getting down on my honkers and then when I get down I can not get back up lol but I go swimming twice a week and do my stepper every day. I have a appointment for my left hip shortly might ask then so it does not happen with my second op.

Thanks for your reply Alison x

I too haven't had physio that's because my consultant doesn't believe in physio, he says the best physio is walking

If it doesn't come through the hospital ask your GP to refer you for physio!
