Hypertension and Coronavirus/Covid-19 Vulnerability ...

I happened to run into a chap who I had gone to University with - low these many decades ago - and he (now a virologist) told me some interesting things about the current Coronavirus/Covid-19 situation that is currently gripping our globe. He is in fact currently working on this.

(i) There is some doubt about the current test it seems - but then there is a lot of doubt in general it appears over the entire subject at present.

(ii) He said - based on the articulated findings from China - that a common denominator in the deaths was hypertension. They currently believe this is key in the transference from Covid-19 to ARDS - and it is the latter which brings on - as I understood it from what he said - the increase in mortality.

My Question - and one I haven't really been able to get answered is this:

IF YOU HAVE HBP (and I've had genetic hypertension for decades - my own father having died at 42 because of it when I was nine - but have taken medication which has successfully controlled that same for 44 years) THAT IS KEPT UNDER CONTROL BY MEDICATION ARE YOU STILL IN THE HEIGHTENED VULNERABILITY CATEGORY FOR CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 BY VIRTUE OF THE CORE HYPERTENSION?

Does anyone know??? ... or does anyone know where I might go to get this query answered.

I would be most very grateful to hear.

i am curious if hbp is the culprit or pulmonary hypertension as i understand they are different. I would not let this information alarm you too much. At this point, we still have a greater chance of contracting the flu. Keep washing your hands and build up your immunity with healthy food and exercise. Be well.

      Dear Danielle,

Thanks so for your kind and reassuring words.

Simply based on what I have read, some say hypertension ... but many specifically reference hbp .... so I think it might well be that (i.e., hbp) which is the specific concern in this regard.

I'd still love to get an answer to the actual question noted above - or a location I might go to look for it should anyone be aware of such.

      Again, thanks.

According to our media there is going to be a pandemic and we are all doomed and the virus will comeback in future years. Personally I don't believe pandemic. In densely populated Hunan they had less than 90,000 cases and it is dying down with the Chinese now more concerned about it being brought back in the country.

There are reports that the virus enters the lungs through the same ACE2 receptor that controls arterial contraction, and that is addressed by a number of ACE/ARB blood pressure drugs. So there is some relation there, and it is possible that ACE/ARB drugs may help prevent or reduce infection.

I have also seen these charts that the number of these ACE2 receptors you have varies with your genetics, and that Asians tend to have the most, Europeans the least, and it's about a two-to-one difference. I'd never heard this before the start of all this virus hubbub.

So, maybe this good news, and maybe it's not. Waiting on the real scientists to give us a little more real info.
