Hypertension Medications Causing Intolerable Gastric Pain

Hi,

I am having hypertension and have tried several medications; atenolol, hydrochlorothiazide, amlodipine, telmisartan, losartan and irbesartan, and all those medications causes me unbearable side effects, especially gastric pain. If I took ¼ or half a tablet, I could still tolerate without much gastric pain, however my blood pressure is high and my doctor told me to take 1 tablet, but it then causes severe gastric pain. All medications I mentioned above causes gastric pain, but the severity is different, ranging from moderate to intolerable pain. The doctor mentioned that it is uncommon to have gastric pain as a side effect of hypertensive medications but it still depends on individual. So now I am in serious trouble, as I seem to can’t tolerate medications, and if I take only a ¼ which I can tolerate, my blood pressure will spike. Is there anyone who experienced the same problem with me, or anyone with gastric problems taking certain type of high blood medication that doesn’t cause gastric pain? Please share with me as I am helpless. Thank you very much.

    Hi,

I am a 60 year old woman who has been on quite a few medications for my blood pressure as well. Losartan, metoprolol, lisinopril, amlodipine and now Benicar. They all gave me various side effects and I moved to other medications. I was put on Benicar and on a very low dose. My doctor keeps increasing it and I have noticed some severe gastric problems. Benicar is an ARB class drug. It is in the same class as Losartan and Telesmartin. I have been having gastric problems with Benicar as I started increasing the mg, and trying to figure out what is causing my stomach pain. It can be severe and I actually went to the ER a few months ago and they did a CT scan that came back normal. In October I had shingles and have been thinking that the stomach issues were the shingles. Right now with the pandemic doctors aren't as easy to make an appointment with. I did go see a gastroenterology specialist and they ordered a endoscopy and colonoscopy and they keep on changing the test date. Now they aren't scheduled until January and February. I am at a loss and don't know where to turn as well. The pain started out as a discomfort but has changed to a gnawing pain in my abdomen. I get upset at these doctors that say it's not a side effect because if you read the literature on the medication it will tell you nausea, stomach upset, and my medication Benicar has major side effects when it comes to gastric issues. There's even lawsuits against it for some hefty side effects. it is the only med that has worked and I hesitate going off it unless I'm sure it's causing the stomach issues. If you have moved to a different medication that is working let me know. Thanks!

My doctor won't take me off of Benicar until I get an endoscopy and colonoscopy for my abdominal pain. Did the endoscopy the other day and found out I have inflammation at bottom of esophagus due to acid reflux.

Try incorporating carbohydrates into your foods. Eat lots of carbs, they seem to be good for heart rate.
