Hypertrophic scar

hi all,

has anyone had any experience of excessive scarring

i have a concern as my scar seems more red and wormy now than 3 weeks ago, I'm now 9 weeks.

the tension of my scar is tight although I bio oil daily.

when knee bending I feel as if I am tearing the scar tissue which until now I thought was normal at this stage

is it !!!!!

Or should I be making an appointment with the consultant ?

Thanks sue x

Hi I am 12 weeks and my scar is red to. Mainly from swelling. The bi oil is good. They say take 6months longer for scar to fade.

Hi Susan. I am 6 weeks bilateralTKR.  The scar on my right leg is pretty good, and sealed really close except for at the very top, where it is "wormy". I like your description. My right knee on the other hand is really wormy & red - or goes purple when I am cold.  My physio said it is fine and healthy, but I am not impressed. She said to just continue to massage it and it will be fine. I see my surgeon on Monday. I will let you know what he says

HI Sue im not too sure how to answer your question other than to say I had my op 5.3.15 and my scar is still VERY sensitive and sore so much so that I had been putting an elastic bandage over it to protect it if I had to wear my jeans?? I went to physio on Wed and I was telling him how sore and tender it is and he said mine is tender and has fluid but he said things inside are tightening and healing for months but if ur unsure ask your GP its worth a call to stop you worrying???

    Hi Sue

Im a bit behind you at almost 6 weeks but my scar also feels tight and sometimes, though not always, it feels like it's going to burst when I exercise.  I just thought it was normal too.

    Hi Susan

Both of my scars are hypertrophic.  my first knee was done 2.5 years ago and the scar is very thick above the knee, although just a line below the knee.  My consultant said that this was normal, because of the bend.  It's flattened a bit in one place but is obviously quite a thick line, which sometimes looks red and sometimes purple.  It also sometimes still itches.  My second knee (done in Sept) is similar, but not as bad.  I might have to have further surgery on it though, as I cannot straighten it, so I could be heading for further scarring.  I don't mind, as long as I can finally walk properly and without pain.

I'm 13 weeks post op, using bio oil twice daily and my scar is flat but red, and also goes purple when its cold weather. It also seems very tight but after using my exercise bike it does seem to loosen up. Most days it does feel as if it's "stuck down", a sensation I'm not keen on. This, coupled with the numbness, tightness of surrounding muscles, tissues knitting back together underneath the scar etc, results in some interesting pain/sensations.

Some folk recover/heal quicker than others - we've just all got to be patient......which DEFINITELY isn't easy!

Susan, my scar is still red at 15 weeks, it is fading in places but mostly red. Using bio oil twice a day and this seems to keep it supple. xx

My scar is exactly the same, I am 12 weeks post op and experience tightness and swelling daily. My scar changes colour by the hour and can go from white through pink /red and purple and back again daily. My surgeon discharged me yesterday and said that this is all perfectly normal and could take many months to resolve, the healing that is going on in the inside far exceeds anything we can see, hope that reassures you , best wishes

I am 8 1/2 months post op and my scar has formed a keloid on the part above the knee. Very thick, red and also turns purple. Doctor said some people are just prone to these.

    Hi all.

thank you for all your replies,

you  will all appreciate how we focus on something and in the middle of the night it is always worst!

my scar over the last weeks has become wider raised and sensitive, but I am now accepting it's not the end of the world in the grand scale of things!!!

its such a tiring journey of moving along smiling and then coping with the worries of everything doing what it should do ,

i also needed a wake up call from this site to keep it all in perspective.

    thank you all

my short skirt days were behind me well before my tkr, however I have had my shorts on today sat in the garden (surgeon said to use plenty of sun cream) whilst I would not subject the rest of the world to the scar on my knee just yet (is still horrid to look at )it certainly felt good to feel some air on my legs
