Hypnic jerking following a Trimalleolar Fracture 2 days ago.

Hello, I recently suffered a Trimalleolar Fracture about 2 days ago following a fall on my front porch. I've been to the hospital and was sent home with a cast and told to take it easy, I haven't had surgery yet as that is scheduled for next week but every time I drift off to sleep I'm suddenly jolted awake with pain in my ankle. I'm not sure if it is caused by the damaged nerves but sleeping has proven difficult, is there any way to alleviate this and rest comfortably?

I had this same symptom after I had my ankle fusion. I too think it was damaged nerves sending impulses to the brain which signals a twitch. It used to hurt when that happened too! The only thing that helped were muscle relaxants - speak to your doctor about getting some.

    Good luck.

Thank you very much for the speedy reply! I'll see if my doctor can prescribe muscle relaxers then and finally get a good night's rest.

Id keep the ankle elevated, take pain medication or take a sleep med to help with sleep. I use Zquil gummies that are melatonin based when I have difficulty sleeping

I had to wait 6 days before my surgery was scheduled but I took Advil and I was lucky to have little to no pain other than the day I fell and broke my ankle

    Good luck with your surgery

Ooooh I remember this well!!! I used to jerk and jolt and this occurred a few times after the Orif surgery also. I used to make sure I had lots of pillows either side of the sofa so the impact of it coming back down was a soft one.

I also think it is because of the damage and the nerves etc. Hang in there it will ease and stop.

Oh man! I thought I was going crazy when this happened. It was so painful and annoying. The first day after surgery I was in so much pain I couldnt sleep. I finally fell asleep and BAM! My foot jerks and woke me up. I was so p****d lol. Eventually it did stop. Im not sure why it happens but your not the only one! Dont worry it does stop after awhile. Just make sure lots of pillows and taking whatever meds your dr prescribes. Hang in there it gets better!
